Former MSU star Draymond Green backs Keith Appling

It is no secret that Tom Izzo’s Michigan State team has battled through plenty of injuries this season. MSU senior point guard Keith Appling is one of those players, who is playing through a wrist injury, which he suffered in early December and re-aggravated against Indiana on Jan.21. Since that game, Appling has struggled mightily from the field, shooting just 14-of-44 from the field (.318) and a measly 3-of-15 from 3-point range (20 percent). Appling admits that the wrist injury still bothers him and that he’s nowhere close to 100 percent. But that doesn’t mean anyone is giving up on

Fan Q&A: Former MSU standout Draymond Green

Coming off a 27-9 season, expectations are extremely high for the 2013-14 Michigan State men’s basketball team. Tom Izzo’s club returns four starters this year, including reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year Gary Harris, who is picked by many to be the conference Player of the Year this season. The last Spartan to be named Big Ten Player of the Year? Draymond Green. The former All-American had a standout four year career for the Spartans, leading the program to two Final Four appearances and a Big Ten Championship in 2012. Green, now a member of the Golden State Warriors,

Big Ten Geeks: Is there life after Green?

We’re going to try something new this year. Instead of just previewing every team like we usually do, we’ll give the people what they really want—ammunition to win arguments. So for every team, we’ll have both sides of the debate covered. Today, we’ll look at what we can expect from Michigan State after it loses its leader, Draymond Green. Point: No. The Big Ten Player of the Year and First Team All-American was clearly an offensive giant. Not only could he score (averaging about 17 points per Big Ten game) and shoot (he made 46 percent of his three-point attempts

Big Ten Interviews from the NBA Combine

BTN’s Jim Jackson caught up with six Big Ten names working out at the NBA’s pre-draft combine in Chicago. Jackson talked to Jared Sullinger, William Buford, Draymond Green, Jordan Taylor, Meyers Leonard, and Robbie Hummel. If you’re running games down at the gym, that’s a pretty good first six right there. Sullinger talks about getting into NBA shape this spring while Hummel tells Jackson about his numerous workouts  and how his knees are feeling so far. Watch all of the interviews down in this post. Also, The Sporting News has a quick look at the combine here, and the NBA

Six ex-Big Ten stars invited to NBA Combine

Wisconsin’s Jordan Taylor was a late addition to the NBA Combine, but he’ll join Illinois’ Meyers Leonard, Michigan State’s Draymond Green, Ohio State’s William Buford and Jared Sullinger and Purdue’s Robbie Hummel at the event June 6-8 in Chicago (see the full list of players). The combine is a great way for players to make last-minute improvements to their draft stock, and that’s exactly what these guys will try to do. Michigan State's Izzo, Green Win NABC National Awards

Michigan State’s Tom Izzo and Draymond Green were honored as the best in the nation by the National Association of Basketball Coaches on Sunday night. Green became the third Spartan to earn National Player of the Year honors as he was named NABC Division I Player of the Year, while Izzo was named UPS NABC Division I Coach of the Year for the second time in his career. “It means a lot to be one of only three players of the great Spartan tradition to win a player of the year award,” Green said. “We’re talking about greats like Smith,

Big Ten Geeks: Finally, Four

Ohio State was our preseason pick for the cream of the conference, and, despite a bumpy Big Ten slate that left them sharing the title, the Buckeyes are now the last B1G standing. The Sweet Sixteen was rather cruel to Big Ten teams not from Columbus; let’s start with the happy news and work our way through the rest. Ohio State first handled a resilient Cincinnati squad with a magnificent offensive display, shooting 47 percent on threes and taking excellent care of the basketball. The Buckeyes posted the second highest efficiency allowed by Cincinnati all season, and it propelled them

Twitter: Draymond Green does it all

Simply put, Big Ten Player of the Year Draymond Green is on a tear. Riding a two-game triple-double streak in the NCAA tournament, dating back to last season, Green posted 16 points, 13 rebounds and six assists Sunday to lift Michigan State past Saint Louis and into the Sweet 16. The guy literally does it all — he even wiped the floor in the final minutes Sunday. And, of course, Twitter was all over his latest gem of a game. Check out what former rivals and talking heads tweeted about Green. Rick Majerus says he thinks Draymond Green is the
