For a change, Tom Izzo and Michigan State entered a season unranked and on the outside of many experts' list of Big Ten title contenders. Izzo worked his magic, per usual, as the Spartans shared the Big Ten crown, won the Big Ten tournament and earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tourney to highlight Michigan State's 2011-12 athletic year. To make things even better, star forward Draymond Green won Big Ten Player of the Year and earned first-team All-America honors. The Spartans, ultimately, advanced to the Sweet 16, where it lost to Louisville.

Other Michigan State highlights from the 2011-12 athletic year:
- Baseball earned an at-large bid to its first NCAA tourney since 1979.
- Football registered its second consecutive double-digit win campaign en route to becoming the Big Ten's first Legends Division champion and playing in the inaugural Big Ten Football Championship Game.
- Women's golf defended its Big Ten title, coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll won Coach of the Year and Caroline Powers earned All-America honors.
- Rower Laura Cowal was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year and earned All-America honors; varsity eight won fourth straight Big Ten crown.
- Women's cross country claimed its second straight Big Ten championship and went on to finish 16th at the NCAA Championships.
