(AP) Purdue coach Matt Painter suspended starting center A.J. Hammons for three games Monday for violating team rules. Painter did not elaborate on what rules were violated.

Hammons will sit out exhibition games Oct. 30 against Indianapolis and Nov. 4 against Wayne State (Neb.) as well as the season-opener Nov. 8 against Northern Kentucky.

A year ago, Hammons was one of the Big Ten's top freshmen. The 7-foot, 251-pound center averaged 10.6 points and 6.0 rebounds, and Painter had said he expected bigger things from Hammons this season after he reported in better shape.

In a statement issued by the athletic department, Painter said he expects players to meet certain standards and that those who do not must be held accountable.
