Vanderbilt scored seven points in the quarter, and the Commodores lead 7-3 at the end of the first quarter. Vanderbilt executed a balanced offensive attack in the quarter, finishing with 73 yards passing and 65 yards rushing. The Commodores struck first when Jordan Rodgers found Jordan Matthews open for a 22-yard touchdown pass, the final play of a 13-play, 77-yard drive.
Northwestern made the score 7-3 after Jeff Budzien kicked a 40-yard field goal to finish off a 52-yard drive. Pass plays were an afterthought for the Wildcats, as Northwestern threw just two passes on that drive.
Vanderbilt will start the second quarter with possession at the Wildcats' 42-yard line.
