Iowa State stuffed the run, giving up just 11 yards on the ground in the first quarter and the Cyclones lead 6-3 at the end of the first quarter. Iowa State scored when Steele Jantz and Aaron Horne combined for a five-yard touchdown to clinch a 10-play, 75-yard drive, giving the Cyclones the game's first lead. Iowa State missed the extra point.

Iowa made the score 6-3 after Mike Meyer drilled a 23-yard field goal to finish off a 77-yard drive. The Hawkeyes will start the second quarter with the ball at their own six-yard line.
