BTN School Days: Ohio State Buckeyes

As easy as one, two, three. The Ohio State men's basketball team claimed a share of its third consecutive Big Ten championship this spring to highlight the school's 2011-12 academic season. The Buckeyes didn't stop at the regular-season crown, though, earning a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tourney and advancing to its first Final Four since Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. led the way in 2006-07. Ohio State lost to eventual runner-up Kansas in the national semis, but it was another memorable season for Thad Matta and the Buckeyes.

Other Ohio State highlights from the 2011-12 athletic year:

• Men's tennis won its seventh straight Big Ten regular-season crown and advanced to the national quarterfinals, where it lost to UCLA; Ty Tucker won Big Ten Coach of the Year.
• Men's tennis stars Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola won the NCAA doubles championship.
• Football hired former Florida coach Urban Meyer as its new head coach; it also beat then-No. 11 Wisconsin on a late bomb to clinch a prime time thriller.
• Men's soccer players Chris Hegngi (Offensive Player of the Year) and David Tiemstra (Defensive Player of the Year) captured Big Ten individual honors.
• Women's basketball player Samantha Prahalis took home Big Ten Player of the Year, the eighth consecutive season a Buckeye has won the award.
• Field hockey star Jenn Sciulli claimed Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.
• Freshman wrestler Logan Stieber was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and claimed the NCAA title in the 133-pound bracket; women's golfer Kendall Prince won Freshman of the Year accolades as Ohio State advanced to the NCAA Championships; and men's golfer Grant Weaver was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
• Women's diver Bianca Alvarez took home Big Ten Diver of the Year accolades.
• Women's track and field All-American Christina Manning won the NCAA title in the 100-meter hurdles.
