The Minnesota men’s basketball team opened its season with a 71-58 exhibition win against Bemidji State on Tuesday night at Williams Arena. Trevor Mbakwe had 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds and Ralph Sampson III added 15 points and four rebounds to pace the Gophers. Freshman Andre Hollins dished out eight assists without a turnover and scored six points. The weekend saw several of the conference’s soccer, field hockey and volleyball teams in action. The No. 4 Nebraska volleyball team (17-1, 10-0) made history Saturday night, overcoming No. 1 Illinois in a 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-19, 25-11) victory. Indiana Volleyball (8-14, 0-10) fell in four sets to Wisconsin (13-9, 5-5) in five sets (25-20, 18-25, 18-25, 19-25). IU got 16 kills from Ivie Obiemeand five service aces from Caitlin Cox. No. 20 Northwestern got off to another fast start on Friday at Lakeside Field as redshirt freshman Kelsey Thompson scored her first career goal, giving the ‘Cats the early 1-0 lead over the Pacific Tigers just 10 minutes in. The University of Iowa women’s soccer team battled through regulation and into overtime Thursday night in Lincoln, but the efforts were not enough as the team fell to the Cornhuskers, 1-0. No. 15 Penn State women’s soccer won a thrilling nail biter against Nebraska, 5-4, Friday night at Jeffrey Field. Whitney Church tallied her first collegiate goal, a game-winner in the 79th minute, to cap a nine-goal outburst between the two squads which was the most goals in a Penn State match since a 7-2 win vs. Pittsburgh in 2002. The previous four matches in the rivalry’s history ended in ties, but Megan Marsack and Laura Heyboereach scored second-half markers to help Michigan State down Michigan, 2-0, at DeMartin Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Spartan keeper Jill Flietstra made five saves en route to tallying her seventh shutout of the season. With the win, Michigan State improved to 11-4, 4-3 in Big Ten play, while Michigan fell to 8-5-2 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play.
Friday night volleyball action included the Purdue Boilermakers visiting the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Hayley Thramer led Nebraska to a 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-22) win over Purdue.
