Minnesota tops SMU to win NIT crown

(AP) Austin Hollins hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 46.1 seconds left and Minnesota won the NIT championship Thursday night, beating SMU 65-63 to give the Pitino family its latest postseason tournament title. Hollins scored 19 points and Andre Hollins had 14 for the Golden Gophers (25-13), who took home the trophy for the third time. They also won the National Invitation Tournament in 1993 and `98, though the second one was vacated because of an NCAA rules violation involving player eligibility. With coach Richard Pitino’s famous father, Rick, sitting near his son’s bench at Madison Square Garden, Minnesota made up

Is NIT final better than one-and-done NCAA trip?

Minnesota’s NIT semifinal overtime win over Florida State on Tuesday night wasn’t a thing of beauty. But, it doesn’t matter. The triumph means that the Golden Gophers will play SMU for the NIT title on Thursday night. If Minnesota beats SMU, it would give the school 25 wins, which would be second most in school history behind only the 1996-97 squad that won 31 games (later vacated). And it also would give Richard Pitino more wins in his first year as a coach than any other active Big Ten coach achieved during their maiden voyage at their current school. It’s

Video: Richard Pitino's NIT title speech to Gophers

Minnesota didn’t make the NCAA tourney, but it compiled one of the better seasons in team history. The Gophers set a record for wins in a single season (25) on their way to claiming their third NIT crown. Not bad for a team with a first-year coach and a revamped roster from a team that won a game in the NCAA tourney a season ago. Speaking of the first-year coach, Pitino gave a tremendous locker room speech to his players, which you can watch above. One of his biggest messages? That would be this: “Do not let anybody tell you

Minnesota survives FSU in OT, advances to NIT final

(AP) Substitute center Maurice Walker made six free throws in overtime and Minnesota held off Florida State 67-64 on Tuesday night to reach the NIT championship game. Austin Hollins and DeAndre Mathieu scored 17 points apiece for the Golden Gophers (24-13), who squandered a 15-point cushion and overcame Devon Bookert’s tying 3-pointer at the end of regulation. They will play Thursday night against fellow top seed SMU in a title game that certainly features a New York flavor on the sidelines. Minnesota coach Richard Pitino, of course, is the son of former Knicks and current Louisville coach Rick Pitino. He’ll

Minnesota plays Florida State Tuesday in NIT semis

(AP) The court at Madison Square Garden got quite a workout over the weekend with the East Regional of the NCAA tournament held there. Four more college teams are back at the Garden in a hurry as the NIT semifinals will be played there Tuesday and the title game on Thursday. To hear the coaches and players from the teams in the NIT, it’s a thrill to play there regardless of the tournament’s initials. Clemson (23-13) meets SMU (26-9) in Tuesday’s first game, with Florida State (22-13) facing Minnesota (23-13) in the second. All the semifinalists won third-round games at

GIF: Richard Pitino spikes chair in Minnesota huddle

Richard Pitino didn’t seem to want to any part of his chair during a timeout in Tuesday night’s NIT quarterfinal game vs. Southern Miss. With his players gathered around him, the five on the floor sitting in their respective stools, the first-year Minnesota coach picked up his seat and spiked it to the Williams Arena court. Austin Hollins' career-high 32 lifts Gophers to NIT semis

(AP) Austin Hollins scored a career-high 32 points to lead Minnesota to an 81-73 win Tuesday night over Southern Mississippi and a spot in the NIT semifinals. King leads Minnesota to NIT win over Saint Mary's

Joey King scored 18 points and top-seeded Minnesota spotted St. Mary’s a big early lead before surging to a 63-55 win in the second round of the NIT on Sunday. The Gophers fell behind 14-0 after they didn’t score in the game’s first 6:50, finally breaking through on Maurice Walker’s layup. Walker also gave Minnesota (22-13) its first lead at 29-28 on a putback with 14:53 remaining in regulation. The Gophers then went on a 12-0 run and held off the Gaels (23-12) down the stretch to earn a trip to the NIT’s third round. MINNESOTA 63, SAINT MARY’S 55
