Athlon: 18 B1G stars earn preseason All-America honors

Athlon Sports released its College Football 2014 All-America Team on Monday, and 18 Big Ten stars made the cut, with Wisconsin RB Melvin Gordon, Ohio State DT Michael Bennett and Michigan State P Mike Sadler earning first-team distinction. Video: Nick Swisher hits walk-off GS, leads O-H-I-O chant

Nick Swisher did it again. Earlier this year, the former Ohio State star led the home crowd in an O-H-I-O chant after a home run in Cleveland’s win over Minnesota. Thursday, he did it again after drilling a walk-off grand slam to send the Indians past the Angels. Watch Swisher’s grand slam and O-H-I-O in the video above.

NFL.com continues to churn out its 14 for ’14 lists, and it was the nation’s top 14 Heisman Trophy candidates turn Monday. Braxton Miller led a quartet of Big Ten representatives, at No. 3, behind reigning Heisman winner Jameis Winston and Oregon’s Marcus Mariota. Indiana QB Tre Roberson announces he will transfer

Well, this comes as a surprise: Indiana QB Tre Roberson announced Wednesday that he will transfer. Roberson, who threw six touchdown passes in the 2013 finale vs. Purdue, and Nate Sudfeld were expected to share time again in 2014. Last fall, Roberson, the dual-threat option, threw for 1,128 yards and 15 touchdowns and ran for 423 yards and five scores.

BTN had a distinguished visitor Wednesday, as former Maryland and NFL star Shawne Merriman visited our headquarters. Merriman starred for the Terps from 2002-2004, earning All-ACC honors in his final season, and went on to lead the NFL in sacks (2006) and be a three-time All-Pro. Less than a month away from becoming an official Big Ten member, Maryland is getting its community ready for the much-anticipated move. The school has put up “Think B1G” billboards throughout the Baltimore area, both on interstates and at Baltimore-Washington International Airport. Maryland, along with Rutgers, joins the Big Ten on July 1.

Badgers show off uniform combos at photo shoot

Here’s something you probably didn’t know (or care to add up): Wisconsin will have 20 possible uniform combinations this year. The Badgers showed off the designs Wednesday during their annual photo shoot. To be fair, many of the combinations aren’t that different, with the team boasting a primary white helmet and alternate red lid that can be mixed and matched with three facemasks (white, red and black).

The Ohio State football program held its Champions Dinner a couple weeks ago, and there’s a pretty fun YouTube video of the festivities. The dinner is something Meyer does every spring to reward his players for excellence on and off the field. They bond, they barbeque, and they play cornhole, dodgeball and softball. Basically, it’s a day full of fun.

Urban Meyer tweets photo of Ohio Stadium expansion

Like several other stadiums across the nation, Ohio Stadium has undergone several renovations since the the 2013 season. Last month, the team added new field turf and unveiled renderings of a new locker room. The one fans will notice the most is nearing completion, and that’s the addition of approximately 2,600 seats to the south end zone.

Purdue to put student photos on helmet vs. Iowa

Hey, Purdue fans, want to see your face on the Purdue helmet this year? You can make it happen. Really. Purdue announced Wednesday that students who buy a VIP card (PDF) by June 10 will have their face featured in a collage inside the “P” logo for the “Social Media Game” on Sept. 27 vs. Iowa.

Video: Ohio State's Joey Bosa nails standing backflip

Remember Braylon Edwards’ standing backflip following Michigan’s 2004 win over Minnesota? It was impressive. Edwards went on to do an “easier” flip in the NFL. It’s one thing for a receiver to do a backflip, but it’s a completely different thing when a defensive lineman does it. In a J.J. Watt-esque gym video, Ohio State’s Joey Bosa made a standing backflip look way too easy. Update: the video is from two years ago but was just posted.

Video: Jabrill Peppers wows in 100-meter dash

If any Michigan fan wasn’t head-over-heels excited about heralded recruit Jabrill Peppers, the video of the defensive back’s speedy 100-meter dash at last Friday’s state meet should do it. Peppers, a five-star recruit out of New Jersey, used his incredible breakaway speed to defend his crown, with a time of 10.52 seconds. Watch Peppers’ speed in this post.

Forget about the fastest player in the Big Ten, NFL.com’s Bryan Fischer ranked Purdue speedster Raheem Mostert as the nation’s fastest player. So much for the narrative that the Big Ten has no speed, huh? Regardless of conference affiliation, Mostert can fly. He’s shown his speed on the football field (see video above), but he’s done most of his damage in track and field.

Northwestern has no shortage of uniform combinations. Under Armour revamped the team’s look prior to the 2012 season, and last year it introduced an all-white design. There’s countless helmets to go along with the three different jerseys and pants (white, black and purple). Basically, there’s no telling what Northwestern will wear from one Saturday to the next.

Former Maryland receiver and current NFL star Torrey Smith is excited about his school’s move, and he posted a photo to Instagram to prove it. Last year during its run to the Big Ten and Rose Bowl titles, Michigan State unveiled a few new uniform designs. Like, the all-green look it wore for the Big Ten title game and Rose Bowl Game.
