Dienhart: Iowa enters Week 2 bowl projections

One week down—and my bowl projections already have changed following a 10-2 opening week. Don’t tell me that you’re surprised. The first week of the season was more kind to some than others. I’m looking at you, Nebraska and Purdue. And, yes, that’s Iowa you see moving into my bowl picture—even after a loss, which gave me some faith in this Hawkeyes team. Without further adieu, my Week 2 bowl projections.

For the life of me I don’t get the excitement over OSU. They played a poor schedule and needed multiple overtimes to go undefeated. TB.Miller has a lot of T.Pryor in him. He’s going to turn the ball over at inopportune times and that OSU defense is not Tressel era quality. The only way OSU makes it to the MNC game. or any other B1G school, is to go undefeated. They’ll have at least two losses ,before the conference championship game(if they make it) one likely on the road in Ann Arbor, and the other between Northwestern, UW, and PSU. A month from now I fully expect OSU to be in a, last possession wins, shootout in Evanston. Prognosticators have blow it in overvaluing MSU and OSU and undervaluing UW this year. If you’re going to win the conference you better be solid on both sides of the ball neither of the “states” have that.

Will Edwards on 9/2/2013 @ 2:26pm EDT Said:

You sound pretty mad.

Steven Adams on 9/2/2013 @ 2:42pm EDT Said:

I am an OSU fan, but I must say without bias, once OSU is whole, starters in place, there isn’t a team in the country that can touch them. And that includes Alabama. Believe that.

Steven Adams on 9/2/2013 @ 2:43pm EDT Said:

HAHA. He is mad.

Ken Baum on 9/2/2013 @ 2:48pm EDT Said:

Neither wisconsin or Penn State will come to columbus and win.

David A Cleveland Jr on 9/2/2013 @ 3:03pm EDT Said:

Will, he sounds logical…not mad. OSU gave up 20 points to a 4-8 team from last year. They are far from the number 2 team in the country.

Don on 9/2/2013 @ 3:19pm EDT Said:

He is dead on about last year’s performance. OSU went toe-to-toe with (3-9) Cal, (4-8) Indiana & (6-7) Purdue. That is far from a #2 team in the country. And just because you state up front that you are without bias, doesn’t mean it’s not biased. The statement “there isn’t a team in the country that can touch them. And that includes Alabama” is as biased as it gets. OSU is not on Alabama’s level. They aren’t on top tier SEC level. Give me a break.

Enjoy going back to the BWw Bowl Doug HAHa

Will Edwards on 9/2/2013 @ 3:34pm EDT Said:

Have you reserved your tickets for the Capital One bowl yet? Michigan looks more above average than usual this year.

mrwill903 on 9/2/2013 @ 3:35pm EDT Said:

I was at the game Saturday vs Buffalo. Ohio State started out 23-0 in the first quarter. This is without Bradley Roby, Carlos Hyde, and I think Christian Bryant. After the first quarter Meyer pulled the center and Ryan Shazier went down with cramps and sat out for a while. So without 5 starters the Buckeyes were up 23-0 in the second quarter. Freshman Dontre Wilson had a fumble at mid field and Buffalo capitalized. Buffalo’s potential 1st-2nd round draft pick DE Khalil Mack made a big play returning a pick 6. So lets put this in perspective. That pick 6 doesn’t happen it’s 47-13. Buffalo is a fine team with a ton of starters back. Next week Roby and either Bryant/Barnett whichever was out will be back. This Ohio State team with some more priming will be among the best in the country. and to Steven up there. Pryor took teams to Rosé Bowl and Sugar bowl victories with half the fire power this team has. Miller > Pryor… I will say Pryor had more size and natural speed but Miller is more elusive.

Christian Rundle on 9/2/2013 @ 4:07pm EDT Said:

The best thing about Iowa this year is that they look like they can upset a big team like OSU and Michigan. They didnt have that vibe last year

Peter on 9/2/2013 @ 4:12pm EDT Said:

Agree that Miller has too much Prior in him–and that will hold back the Buckeyes.

nico on 9/2/2013 @ 5:08pm EDT Said:

No chance OSU goes undefeated. Both lines struggled yesterday to an inferior team. The B1G ten teams will eat that type of play alive.

Michael on 9/2/2013 @ 5:26pm EDT Said:

Badgers took OSU last time the played the girls in the horseshoe. Thank God belima is gone from Wisconsin now we can go and beat down the NUT.

Matt on 9/2/2013 @ 5:57pm EDT Said:

Steven Adams has the best oxymoron of the day:
“I am an OSU fan, but I must say without bias….”
Hilarious!! By being an OSU fan, you are biased. Get it?
Bama would torch your ass….and I say that without bias because I don’t even like Bama.
Trade in your scarlet and grey shades an you might be able to see a little better.

kevin on 9/2/2013 @ 6:52pm EDT Said:

With the game that OSU played this Saturday I honestly don’t know how anyone in the country can say that they will be playing for a national title. Unless there is some kind of football miracle OSU will be lucky to even play for the B1G conference title.

Ben Schlichter on 9/2/2013 @ 7:58pm EDT Said:

David, don’t forget the number of starters that didn’t play during the game. You had a stretch where 10 of the 11 players on defense had never started a game in their lives.

The real question is if OSU can gel, and gel quickly. Yes, the game was uglier than a #2 should make it look. But if they can emulate that 23-0 1st quarter play for longer stretches, they will be unmatched, because no team last week looked anywhere as good as that stretch last week.

JoeW on 9/2/2013 @ 9:33pm EDT Said:

Per Steven, B. Miller has a bunch of Pryor in him and will turn the ball over at an inopertune time. What data is that based on? His TD to interception ratio is very good including the first game this year. So this is because Steven says so? That doesn’t sound like logic, it sounds like opinion. OSU did give up 20 points but the defense gave up 13. This was also without the best CB in the conference, the senior free safety, and Shazier missing half the games due to cramping. There all back next week as well as getting Rod Smith back and Hyde in another two games. There is a reason OSU is currently favored by Vegas in every game on their schedule, but Steven thinks differently…again sounds like opinion, not logic.

JoeW on 9/2/2013 @ 10:05pm EDT Said:

Michael stated the Badgers beat OSU last time they played in the horseshoe. Well in 2011, the last time the Badgers played in Columbus, they lost 33 -29. By the way, in terms of number of losses that was the worst OSU team in over a hundred years, so way to go Michael!

brian on 9/3/2013 @ 8:08am EDT Said:

ben sorry to hurt your buckeye but Michigan was the best looking team in the big ten last week def. looked so damn good off. gardner threw 2 incpt. but our offence still look better than every ones. as a michgan fan im totally bias when I say the whole big ten is in bad shape when it comes to playing the wolverines good luck to your teams { besides the takes it in the buckeye}s but for most of you, you have no luck and your teams didn’t look all that great. yeah that means you Spartans as well GO BLUE!

Will Edwards on 9/3/2013 @ 11:59am EDT Said:

Hurr derr ok Brian. Michigan has the best offence in the Big Ten.

JoeW on 9/3/2013 @ 1:06pm EDT Said:

Hey B10…has anyone seen this movie before? After winning the May recruiting championship Michigan Man (MM) gets excited and starts beating his chest and talking about how great things were in the leather helmet days. MM then starts to move up in the polls due to scoring a lot against air with the September Heisman Trophy winner. Later as the air cools, MM has to go on the road and start to play other B10 teams…losses mount. In their final B10 game they run into a team that actually gets better as the season plays out and lose (well at least 11 out of the last 13 years). A trip to Florida usually ends the story. Yawn…same old story, different year.

Will Edwards on 9/3/2013 @ 7:27pm EDT Said:

JoeW – Just wait till next year, Michigan’s RECROOOOOTING classes are going to lead them back to their late 19th century glory years. Too bad the majority of Michigan’s coaches (save Mattison) are inept and don’t know how to develop players.

Alex on 9/4/2013 @ 7:38pm EDT Said:

As a Nebraska fan, you have the Huskers rated way too highly. Did you not see the game?

Nostradamus on 9/6/2013 @ 8:11pm EDT Said:

– Hoke’s ugly helmets will lose to the Domers this weekend, @ PSU Oct 12, again @ NW and again on Nov 30th at home against the Buckeyes to finish 8-4 just like last year and will lose yet again to another SEC team (Georgia) in their bowl game.
**But at least Fred Flintstone will improve his historical win % as a head coach

– NW will stay undefeated until they play OSU Oct 5th. They’ll lose that game and then again vs Wisco before rattling off 6 straight to finish10-2 – yes they are that good. They will play OSU for the B10 championship and head for the Outback bowl after their loss and will bring home their second bowl trophy in as many years.

– Wisconsin – wins out except their matchup with OSU and finishes second in the Leader’s division. They end up third in the conference but back into the BCS at large bid and bitch slap an SEC team on New Years day.

– OSU (those of you talking smack about the Buffalo game obviously didn’t watch it and have no clue what went on player wise in the game) will go undefeated and will face Oregon in the BCS NCG for Urban Meyer’s 3rd crystal football.
