Big Ten bowls: We predict all seven games

Every week this season, BTN.com’s Brent Yarina (@BTNBrentYarina) and Tom Dienhart (@BTNTomDienhart) offered their predictions for each Big Ten football game and provided polls for fans to pick their winners. We’re doing the same this bowl season. Heading into the games, BTN.com fans are atop the season standings, two games ahead of Dienhart. See our bowl predictions and choose your winners in this post.

SEASON RECORDS

Brent: 69-28; .711

Meineke Car Care Bowl: Minnesota (6-6) vs. Texas Tech (7-5) - 9 p.m. ET Dec. 28 – ESPN
Tom’s pick: Texas Tech, 35-21 – The Gophers don’t have enough offense to keep up with a Red Raiders unit that can put up points in a hurry.
Brent’s pick: Texas Tech, 41-20 – No Tommy Tuberville, no problem. Texas Tech lost its head coach to Cincinnati, but it still has QB Seth Doege, who threw for at least six touchdowns in three games this season.

Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl: Michigan State (6-6) vs. TCU (7-5) – 10:15 p.m. ET Dec. 29 – ESPN
Tom’s pick: Michigan State, 21-19 – This one figures to be a tough, low-scoring game that hearkens to a black-and-white era. Watch Le’Veon Bell run. A lot.
Brent’s pick: TCU, 23-17 – Breaking news: TCU’s Gary Patterson can coach. And he’s really good in bowl games, winning six of the last seven, the lone loss to Boise State in the 2010 Fiesta Bowl.

Heart of Dallas Bowl: Purdue (6-6) vs. Oklahoma State (7-5) – noon ET Jan. 1 – ESPNU
Tom’s pick: Oklahoma State, 40-30 – This may be the most fun game to watch among the Big Ten bowls. But in the end the Pokes have too much firepower.
Brent’s pick: Oklahoma State, 48-27The Cowboys average 44.7 points (4th in FBS) and fling the ball all over the field. It will be tough for the Boilers to tame or keep up with this offensive attack.

Gator Bowl: Northwestern (9-3) vs. Mississippi State (8-4) – noon ET Jan. 1 – ESPN2
Tom’s pick: Northwestern, 30-27 – The two-headed quarterback duo of Kain Colter and Trevor Siemian will have its way, as the Wildcats end a dubious nine-game losing skid.
Brent’s pick: Northwestern, 29-24 – No matter the opponent, Northwestern is in the game. In this one, the offense might want to introduce a few new wrinkles, centered around Kain Colter, to help the program tally its first bowl win since 1948.

Outback Bowl: Michigan (8-4) vs. South Carolina (10-2) – 1 p.m. ET Jan. 1 – ESPN
Tom’s pick: South Carolina, 27-24 – The Wolverines will struggle to score vs. a fast and tough Gamecock defense, led by all-world defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney.
Brent’s pick: South Carolina, 23-20 – No team’s losses have come against better competition (12-1 Alabama; 12-0 Notre Dame; 12-0 Ohio State; 10-3 Nebraska), and Michigan’s offense has struggled in each defeat. That’s a bad sign vs. South Carolina.

Capital One Bowl: Nebraska (10-3) vs. Georgia (11-2) – 1 p.m. ET Jan. 1 – ABC
Tom’s pick: Georgia, 33-27 – The Huskers will score. The issue? The Bulldogs’ offensive balance will keep the Cornhusker defense reeling.
Brent’s pick: Georgia, 34-24- Here’s a scary stat: Nebraska gave up an average of 56 points in its three losses. While Georgia doesn’t figure to sniff that total, it should have no trouble moving the ball against a defense that doesn’t rival a top SEC unit.

Rose Bowl: Wisconsin (8-5) vs. Stanford (11-2) – 5 p.m. ET Jan. 1 – ESPN
Tom’s pick: Stanford, 29-28 – These teams are mirrors of each other, both playing physical offense with underrated defenses. The difference will be at quarterback.
Brent’s pick: Stanford, 27-24 – For all the flak Wisconsin has gotten about being the worst Rose Bowl team of all time, it will keep this one close before suffering its third consecutive defeat in the Grandaddy of Them All.

Wisconsin and Stanford game will be a toss-up however with
Barry coaxhing that will be enough incentative for the badgers to edge Stanford by a 24-21 score

I’m a Big 10 fan but I think Northwestern is the only team that may win.
Recruiting has to get better. Coaching has to step up. Speed is something our conference lacks.

Jared Cole on 12/16/2012 @ 1:39pm EDT Said:

I agree with you, Mark. I have Northwestern as the only B1G team winning their bowl game. The B1G was less than impressive this season and I think that carries into the postseason. I feel bad for Nebraska drawing Georgia in that game. UGA is a BCS team in a non-BCS bowl.

Ron on 12/16/2012 @ 1:41pm EDT Said:

I think Michigan has the best chance to win their bowl. Northwestern if they don’t choke in the 4th quarter. Wisconsin is going to get killed. I’m hoping all big ten teams win. We need it!

Mee-chigan will win!

The Huskers will bounce back from a disappointing big ten championship showing. The dogs better be ready cause the real big red are comin.

jwmort on 12/16/2012 @ 4:30pm EDT Said:

The Rose Bowl has a “Champion” in name only, Wisconsin is NOT the B1G Champion, they can’t be when they didn’t even win their division. The only shot this weak conference has at winning is Northwestern, the rest are out of their league, against teams far superior to them.
Next year … The Ohio State University DOMINATES.

I think MSU will win in a close one

Doug on 12/16/2012 @ 7:12pm EDT Said:

MSU will win a tight one, NEB an Michigan will get owned

Badger Bill on 12/16/2012 @ 9:29pm EDT Said:

To jwmort: Wisconsin IS the B1G Champions because we earned it. Wisconsin doesn’t do anything unethical like selling championship bling for ugly tattoos or cars like those cracked “buck nuts” did, and have sorry coach like “vest man” to hide the facts from the NCAA. The only thing you guys got was a blank t-shirt. We got the hats, shirts and a bouquet of roses accepting the championship and trip to Pasadena, or as we refer to as West Madison, California. DEAL WITH IT!!! ON WISCONSIN!!! THEE 3-TIME B1G CHAMPIONS IN A ROW!!!

we can predict all we want and see the results but, its bowl time and strange things happen in bowl season. Good luck to all the BIG teams and GO BIG RED!

Mike Waite on 12/17/2012 @ 5:10pm EDT Said:

MSU is the only school to get over 50% in the above poll, and I think that’s about right. But MSU will be hungry. They have a lot to proove and they are under ranked after the disappointing season, so I predict they take it out on TCU and handle them pretty easily. Northwestern has a decent shot at an upset. WI looked good againt a pretty weak Neb, so they are unlikely to beat Stanford. UM, Neb are likely to get whomped.

All bashing aside, Wisconsin will get embarrassed in Pasadena (Go Stanford!), and the Husker-D will surprise you this time around, Brent (Go Huskers!). Smile :-) & Happy Holidays to all of you!

Jack on 12/19/2012 @ 7:03pm EDT Said:

As a B1G alum and true fan, I personally hope that ALL B1G teams win their games as convincingly as the B1G champion Badgers beat Nebraska. So to the sour grapes people out there, Wisconsin earned their trip to Pasadena by winning their division based on the rules they were given and if Nebraska deserved to go, they should have shown up on Dec 1st. As for Ohio State, they are in the penalty box and are serving their 1 year penalty which they should have done in 2010 rather than go to the Sugar Bowl. Most of the current players had nothing to do with that Tattoogate team, but the powers that be only saw the dollar signs from the BCS game and so they are paying for it now. I do feel sorry for the PSU guys, as none of the players for a decade had anything to do with Sandusky yet these players are paying the price for the awful events of the late 1990’s…

ukeone on 12/20/2012 @ 2:16am EDT Said:

Now Jack comes-on & I have to ‘bash’ all-of-a-sudden. I hate that! Jack: Leaders Division #3 Wisconsin made-it to Indianapolis because it was “fed” to them on a silver-spoon (via Ohio State & Penn State, the REAL division winner & runner-up, respectively)…and not because UW “earned” it. Nebraska WON their division outright, beating the teams that beat UW! Remember, the Badgers didn’t show-up to Lincoln earlier in the season (just as it did not to other games during the season as well)…and Wisconsin won in the championship game because they ‘had nothing to lose’ if they didn’t (teams often play very well under those ‘freakish’ circumstances), while Nebraska went into Indianapolis ‘very overconfident’ and paid the ultimate price (a ‘painful’ learning experience). And the ‘just’ reward for UW’s un-earned, last-chance spurge: a trip to Pasadena without all its big-time loser, AWOL coaches!!! I’m sure Alvarez and his office calculator will do a lot for UW when it faces Stanford (who WILL kick UW’s proverbial butt & WIN the Rose Bowl BIG-TIME…by 4 or more touchdowns…to the impending embarrassment of the B1G!!!). We’ll see who shows-up where on January 1st; my man; and then again, there’s next year’s meeting between the Huskers & the BADgers (if we do indeed meet again)…IF that happens (which I sincerely doubt to a pending 5-7 team): still, the HUSKERS will remember the 2012 Indianapolis game ‘fondly;’ then, we’ll see who show’s-up at that time (certainly not the ex-coaches…who went-on to GREENER $$$ pastures and certainly NOT UW). But I don’t believe Wisconsin will get “spoon-fed” again next year, anyway! With the new staff, they’ll scratch and scrape to their toilet bowl. And, by the way, Jack…the grapes are far more ‘sour’ in Madison (where the ‘SOUR-est’ fans in all of college football exist)! They can’t even attract a ‘decent’ new coach! Happy holidays to you, anyway, Jack! ;-(

What if we go 5-2?

Michael Honscar (@MCHonscar) on 12/24/2012 @ 2:59pm EDT Said:

Went with Northwestern, Wisconsin and Michigan State winning. I was exactly right on my Big Ten bowl predictions last year in how many Big Ten teams would win and which would so let’s see if i can do it again.

Ben24 on 12/30/2012 @ 2:05pm EDT Said:

My predictions:
Minnesota 31 TTU 38
MSU 14 TCU 10
Purdue 17 OSU 45
NU 27 Miss St 34
Nebraska 24 Georgia 34
UofM 13 S Car 24
UW 34 Stanford 38
I hate to say it but the big ten will struggle.I honestly dislike Wisconsin, but everybody stop downing them. Look what they did to Nebraska. They won’t win but they will hang in there.Minnesota will have control most of the game but will fall apart in the 4th quarter.
Nebraska just won’t have things going the whole game and will be a step behind the bulldogs the whole way.Same gos for NU. MSU is the big tens best chance. They will win a close one with not many passing yards but a descent game for Le’Veon. UM will look great in the first half nd then the mistakes will start in the 3rd. Clowney and company will take care of the ground game of Michigan and take over.
Now, I didn’t want to say all that but the big ten has had a rough year. 1, most of our teams have not lived up to there expectations and 2, the big ten was not looked up to with the PSU scandal. I hope our teams can prove me wrong and represent our conference by winning most of our bowls. Go Big Ten!!!
