It’s time for my Big Ten basketball 3-Pointers, my look back at the week that was in the Big Ten—with a sneak peek at what’s to come. It has been a good week to be Minnesota and Indiana. It hasn’t been such a good week to be Ohio State and Illinois. And if you’re Richard Pitno’s jacket from Thursday night, you had a little bit of good and bad this week.
What would it be like growing up as the son of a well-known NHL Hockey player? Just ask Penn State sophomore Tommy Olczyk, who is one of the top players on Penn State’s men’s ice hockey team. Olczyk is the son of former NHL standout Ed Olczyk, who played 16 years in the NHL, helping the New York Rangers capture the 1994 Stanley Cup. Ed currently serves as a color commentator on NHL on NBC, NHL on NBC Sports Network and for the Chicago Blackhawks on Comcast SportsNet Chicago.
The Ohio State tailspin continues, as the loss at Minnesota last night makes it three in a row for the Buckeyes. Weren’t they just ranked, like, No. 3 in the nation the other day? No one denies that this Ohio State team plays good defense. But the offense is struggling. More shooters are needed, among other things. And the turnovers need to be reduced. I’m looking at you, Aaron Craft and Shannon Scott.
It was freezing cold outside in Minneapolis on Thursday night, but tempers got red hot inside the Barn during the second half of Minnesota’s upset of No. 11 Ohio State.
Richard Pitino notched his first signature win at Minnesota as the Gophers upset No. 11 Ohio State 63-53 on Thursday night in Minneapolis. The victory marked Minnesota’s first win against a ranked opponent this season, while Ohio State dropped its third straight game for the first time since 2009.
