No. 4 Nebraska upends No. 1 Penn State

No. 4 Nebraska took down No. 1 Penn State in a five-set thriller (12-25, 32-30, 19-25, 25-23, 15-10) Sunday afternoon at the Coliseum. In front of a roaring 4,193 in attendance, Nebraska produced its third five-set win of the season. Gina Mancuso led Nebraska on the day with 16 kills and 17 digs, while Hannah Werth notched 11 kills and a career-high 27 digs.

The Big Ten race continues to take shape, as nine weeks are in the books. A big story this week: Injuries at quarterback. Last week, Ohio State’s Braxton Miller left the game with a neck injury but returned to play well this Saturday. But now, Wisconsin lost Joel Stave for the season with a collarbone injury and Michigan saw Denard Robinson go down with a right elbow issue that he is supposed to rebound from next Saturday. Scary stuff. Here is what I learned this week.

Illinois downs Lewis, 79-47, in exhibition

]Illinois defeated Lewis, 79-47, in an exhibition game Saturday night at the Assembly Hall. The Illini jumped out to a 26-4 lead, draining six of their first eight 3-point attempts during the early spree. Illinois’ defense was equally as impressive early on, holding Lewis to 1-of-13 shooting. Eleven Illini entered the scoring column, with three in double figures: D.J. Richardson (12 points), Myke Henry (11) and Sam McLaurin (11).
