Big Ten mailbag: Signing Day queries & hoops

Keep those cards and letters coming, America. Lots of good questions each week as we head into the home stretch of the hoop season and put a bow on the 2013 recruiting season. Want to get in touch? Drop me a note. But first, let’s get started with this week’s answers. Which school surprised you the most on Signing Day? – Mike L. I was surprised that Penn State was able to finish seventh in the Big Ten despite signing the smallest class—just 17 players—in the Big Ten. QB Christian Hackenberg and TE Adam Breneman will lead the Nittany Lions out

Dienhart: Ups & downs make for one amazing week

No school epitomized the state of college basketball in 2012-13 better than Indiana this week. The Hoosiers won a thrilling game over No. 1 Michigan on Saturday night to move into sole possession of first place in the Big Ten and atop the polls—only to suffer the low of lows last night by losing to an unranked Illinois team that had lost six of its last seven games. The coming week surely has more twists and turns we don’t see coming, beginning with four gams on Saturday and two more on Sunday. THREE STOCKS TO BUY Illinois Leaders Points: B. Paul

Illinois Fighting Illini football

Plan ahead: Spring football dates are in

Are you ready for some spring football? Hey, it’s not the real thing with packed stadiums, marching bands, tailgaters and cheerleaders all pouring their hearts into a regular season game. But, it’s the next best thing to cure your football fix. Northwestern is the first to start, opening spring drills on Feb. 27. Minnesota is the last to open, starting on March 26. Following is the spring start date for each school and the date for the spring game. Mark your calendars accordingly. And stayed tuned to for coming updates on how to watch these events. Dienhart: Q&A with Penn State's D.J. Newbill

This has been a trying season for Penn State. You don’t have to remind D.J. Newbill who has overcome bigger things in his life, including a transfer and the loss of his mother. The 6-4 sophomore is doing his part to get the Nittany Lions on track. How tough has it been? Penn State is 0-10 in the Big Ten and 8-14 overall. Not having star point guard Tim Frazier has made matters challenging for Newbill and Penn State, as Frazier is out with a left Achilles tendon injury suffered just four games into the season. Newbill is trying to

Big Ten links: Win brightens Illini tourney hopes

The denizens of Champaign-Urbana (Chambana to the hip natives) woke up this morning dreaming of the NCAA tourney. Why not? Illinois’ stunning 74-72 defeat of No. 1 Indiana last night has breathed life into what was listing team and set off a party on Green Street. I have to start daily links right there. Loren Tate of Champaign News-Gazette says the victory was quite a moment for seniors Brandon Paul, D.J. Richardson, Sam McLaurin and Tyler Griffey. Speaking of Griffey, how on god’s green earth did he get that wide open? (I’m looking at you, Christian Watford and Cody Zeller.)

Illinois knocks off No. 1 Indiana in dramatic fashion

Tyler Griffey made an uncontested layup at the buzzer off a baseline inbounds pass and Illinois beat No. 1 Indiana 74-72 on Thursday night, the fifth straight week the nation’s top-ranked team has lost. The Illini (16-8, 3-7 Big Ten) trailed 41-29 at halftime and by double digits for most of the second half before closing the game on a 13-2 run over the final 3:36. Big Ten survey: Toughest player in men's hoops?

Yes, the object in basketball is score. You need athletes, shooters, passers and rebounders. But good teams also possess toughness. You don’t have to be 6-10, 250 pounds to be tough. Nope, toughness comes in many shapes and sizes. I think back to some past Big Ten players who embodied what I felt was true toughness—players like Ohio State’s Chris Jent, Michigan’s Steve Grote, Michigan State’s Mateen Cleaves, Iowa’s Jess Settles and Purdue’s Jim Rowinski—among others. Those guys were bulldogs who gave no quarter while on the floor, true warriors. Who is the Big Ten’s toughest player? Using a rather
