B1G women's hoops tourney: Five breakout candidates

The 2014 Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament is set to kick off on Thursday on BTN/BTN2Go. Penn State and Michigan State shared the Big Ten regular season crown, and therefore have grabbed the top two seeds in the tournament. Both those teams are loaded with superstar players, but who are some of the under-the-radar players who could play huge roles in leading their team to a Big Ten title? Let’s take a look several Big Ten players who have been playing their best basketball as of late, but don’t necessarily receive the headlines that some of the conference’s superstars do.

Dienhart: Can Wisconsin earn a No. 1 seed?

Few teams in the nation are playing better than Wisconsin. In fact, the Badgers may have the stuff of a No. 1 NCAA seed. Really. Read on. The Badgers have ripped off seven wins in a row, improving to 24-5 overall and 11-5 in the Big Ten. The recent surge has pushed Wisconsin back into the Top 10, as the No. 9 Badgers are the highest-ranked team in the Big Ten. Wisconsin began the season on a roll, jetting to school-record 16-0 start that pushed it to No. 3 in the nation. That’s when things turned sour for Wisconsin. The

Dienhart: Watch QB & defense at Illinois this spring

Year Three of the Tim Beckman era is about to dawn. And the picture in Champaign is still fuzzy. Is Illinois a program on the rise? The good news: Illinois ended a dubious 20-game Big Ten losing streak last season. The bad news: Progress has made glacial tangible progress under Beckman, who is 6-18 overall in two years and 1-15 in the Big Ten. Last year offered some glimmers of hope with the offense showing life under new coordinator Bill Cubit, whose attack ranked No. 5 in the Big Ten (426.7 ypg). But overall, the first two seasons have been

Video: Le'Veon Bell shows off dunking skills

The way Le’Veon Bell hurdled defenders during his final season at Michigan State, it should come as no surprise the Pittsburgh Steelers running back can dunk with absolute ease. Bell, the 2012 Big Ten rushing leader, recently posted a video of himself putting on a personal dunk contest to his Instagram account. It was an impressive showcase. Watch his dunks and hurdling runs in this post. just a lil somethin to show the hurdling is not a fluke…lol 😂 I only dunk for fun! haha #shoutout @rriggs10 for comin in clutch with the footage… A video posted by LeVeon Bell

B1G Wrestling Championships preview: 149 pounds

We decided to have a little fun providing a preview to this year’s B1G Wrestling Championships on March 8-9 at Wisconsin. BTN wrestling analyst Jim Gibbons, an NCAA champion both as a wrestler and coach at Iowa State, will break down one weight class a day, and pick a winner, each day through March 7. Today, it’s the 149-pound weight class. Along with the breakdown and pick, I’m including my Mr. Upside. These are guys whose arrow is pointed in the right direction and have the stuff to perform better than their seed. The kind of guys who every coach on

Ranking games: Teams pushing for tourney spots

The last week of Big Ten action is at our doorstep. Michigan is looking to wrap up the outright Big Ten title, Wisconsin is looking to extend a seven-game winning streak and make a push for a share of the crown, while Nebraska, Minnesota, Indiana and Illinois are looking to make pushes for the NCAA tourney. Here’s a look at each game this week. Use our scoreboards for a look at the daily Big Ten schedules, too. 1. Iowa at Michigan State, Thurs., March 6: Both of these teams are wheezing across the finish line. The Hawkeyes ended a three-game

Dienhart: Three key areas for Gophers in spring ball

The good times are rolling at Minnesota, as Jerry Kill continues to put his stamp on the program. The proof: The Golden Gophers’ win total has improved each of Kill’s three seasons, going from three to six to eight victories last season. The guy has won at every stop in his career. At one point in 2013, Minnesota was 8-2 and rode its first four-game Big Ten winning streak since 1973 en route to a second consecutive bowl under Kill’s stewardship. Best of all, Kill appears to have his health issues under control after missing several 2013 games and working

Read these 10 Tuesday Big Ten headlines

Michigan’s game at Illinois game tonight (read the review) that will take place tonight didn’t look so interesting a few weeks ago. Now, it drips with intrigue. A win would wrap up the outright Big Ten title for the Wolverines, the program’s first since 1985-86. But they know the threat that the Fighting Illini poses, having won three in a row and held their last four foes under 50 points. The Illini are motivated to win-out in a pursuit of an NCAA bid. This is gonna be a fun game. And, yes, Michigan could lose. *** Have you noticed the

Dienhart: Keep an eye on these spots at Wisconsin

Gary Andersen’s debut in Madison was a rousing success—save for the stumble at the end that saw the Badgers lose their regular-season finale at home to Penn State and then fall to South Carolina in the bowl game. Still, there is a lot for Wisconsin to build on after last year’s 9-4 mark that saw the program’s run of three consecutive Rose Bowls come to end. Andersen needs to develop more big-play ability on offense with a passing game that ranked No. 9 in the Big Ten (197.1 ypg). That task is complicated by the loss of star receiver Jared
