Ever wonder why the SEC is on such a dominant run and the Big Ten is, well, seemingly playing catch up like every other league? Purdue athletic director Morgan Burke offers up what he thinks to the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel is the difference between the Big Ten and SEC business models.
Burke: “You have two very different models. You have an SEC model and a Big Ten model. The SEC model, almost across the board, is sponsoring the minimum number of sports (16). I’m not being negative toward the SEC, but their strategy has been to take seven men’s sports and nine women’s sports. That puts them in a gender equity balance. If you are getting 80,000 to 90,000 in your stadium, what that means is you’re spending an awful lot on football. You have to call it what it is. I’m not saying it’s wrong.”

The NBA conducted its draft lottery Tuesday night, setting the order of the 2013 draft which will be held June 27. And the Cleveland Cavaliers won for the second time in three years. Now, speculation has begun anew as to which teams will take what players now that we know the order.

Tom Crean and Indiana spent a big portion of last season ranked No. 1 in the nation. As we all know, though, the Hoosiers lost a ton of talent, including Jordan Hulls, Victor Oladipo, Christian Watford and Cody Zeller. They return Yogi Ferrell and Will Sheehey and also welcome a decorated incoming class, so the question needs to be asked: Should Indiana be ranked in the preseason polls? Minnesota junior-to-be Joe Coleman was granted a release from his scholarship, the Gophers announced Wednesday afternoon. Coleman, who averaged 7.2 points and 3.3 rebounds in two seasons in Minneapolis, will seek a transfer. The guard will have to sit out next season due to NCAA transfer rules.
