#BTNStandout: Cristoval Nieves lights lamp with highlight goal

A guy nicknamed “Boo” brought the Michigan faithful to its feet Friday night at Yost Ice Arena. [ MORE: Watch more of our favorite #BTNStandout plays ] Senior forward Cristoval “Boo” Nieves delighted the fans with a highlight-reel goal that saw him split three defenders on a rush from his own blueline and go top-corner in the Wolverines’ 8-3 victory over Minnesota. It was a significant goal, too. It broke a 2-2 tie early in the second period and sparked a Michigan run that included six of the game’s final seven goals. Minnesota women claim third NCAA hockey title in last four seasons

The University of Minnesota women’s hockey team defeated Harvard University, 4-1, to earn its sixth national championship in front of a sold-out crowd at Ridder Arena Sunday afternoon. [ MORE: Minnesota men make NCAA tournament field ] Big Ten schools have now claimed five national titles so far this academic year, including championships for Michigan State women’s cross country, Minnesota women’s ice hockey, Ohio State football and wrestling and Penn State women’s volleyball. Megan Wolfe put the Gophers up 1-0 late in the first period. Junior Hannah Brandt and seniors Meghan Lorence and Rachael Bona scored in the final minutes

Minnesota lone Big Ten team to make NCAA men's hockey tourney

Big Ten regular season and postseason champion Minnesota is the lone Big Ten men’s hockey team to make the NCAA field, it was announced Sunday. [ MORE: View the official NCAA tournament bracket ] The Gophers, who won the Big Ten tournament title Saturday night to claim the Big Ten’s automatic berth, open the tourney vs. Minnesota-Duluth at 5:30 p.m. ET Friday on ESPNU. Should Minnesota win, it would face the Boston University-Yale winner for a berth in the Frozen Four. This marks Minnesota’s fourth consecutive NCAA tourney appearance and the 36th in program history.
