Another week brought more exciting finishes in big ten play. In Columbus, Michael Geiger’s field goal gave Michigan State its second straight win in Columbus for the first time since 1951, ending the Buckeyes’ nation-long 24 game winning streak. And then in Madison, you had five turnovers, six Wildcat sacks, a pair of missed field goals, a running back spiking a football, three overturned touchdowns via replay and an education of the fair catch rule in a 13-7 Northwestern win; the Wildcats’ first victory at Camp Randall Stadium since the turn of the century.

Survive and advance was the theme last weekend in Big Ten play. Michigan State lost Connor Cook to injury and proceeded to have a season-low 262 total yards of offense in a win against Maryland. Iowa escaped with a five-point victory against a pesky Minnesota squad. Northwestern needed a late touchdown by Justin Jackson, his first in two months, to beat Purdue by a touchdown. And Michigan needed a fourth down stop at the Hoosiers 2-yard line to squeak out an overtime triumph at Indiana.

Five Big Ten football facts heading into Week 10

It’s a historical week for the Big Ten. With a 31-15 victory over Maryland last Saturday, Iowa continues to keep pace with Ohio State and Michigan State as the three remaining undefeated teams in the conference. But what makes this so special is that the Big Ten has three teams who have all reached 8-0 for the first time in 112 seasons. It was last accomplished in 1903 when Illinois, Minnesota and Northwestern all started a perfect 8-0.

Last weekend finally provided a moment where both Ohio State and Michigan State could exhale. The Buckeyes, behind J.T. Barrett’s five total touchdowns in his first start of the season, took care of Rutgers in New Jersey, narrowly missing a shutout. Meanwhile in East Lansing, Connor Cook finished two yards shy of 400 yards passing as the Spartans rolled to a 26-point victory against Indiana. Both teams head into their bye week’s with the conference’s only 8-0 marks (Iowa will look to join them this week when they host Maryland).

We had an offensive explosion in Columbus (Ohio State’s season-high 49 points), two narrow escapes (Michigan State winning by seven at Rutgers and Wisconsin nipping Nebraska by two), a defensive clinic (Michigan recording their third straight shutout, the first time a Big Ten team has done that in 35 years) and a complete blowout (Minnesota with a 41-13 triumph at Purdue).

The Golden Gophers tallied 271 rushing yards in their 34-23 win over the Cornhuskers, their most in Big Ten play this season and most against a conference opponent since recording 327 yards against Michigan State in 2005.
