The challenges facing Rutgers athletic department are many for new A.D. Patrick Hobbs. Just when does he think the department will turn a profit?

NJ.com says the state university spent nearly $77 million on its sports program in 2014, but only managed to bring in about half that amount through ticket sales, donations and other revenues, according to NCAA reports. That left the university and students to make up the difference. In 2014, Rutgers' athletic department received a $36 million subsidy - the largest of any NCAA Division I school in the country - from university funds and student fees.
