Illinois will host NCAA Regional for first time in program history

The NCAA Division I Baseball Committee announced the 16 regional sites for the 69th annual NCAA Division I Baseball Championship on Sunday, and Illinois will play host to a regional for the first time.

Illinois Field will welcome three additional NCAA Tournament teams for a four-team, double-elimination competition.

The rest of the tourney field will be announced at noon ET Monday on ESPNU. Michigan, the Big Ten tourney champ, earned the conference’s automatic berth with its 4-3 victory over Maryland in the Big Ten tourney final Sunday.

Regional play begins Friday, May 29 and runs through Monday, June 1 (if necessary). All NCAA Regional action will be broadcast by the ESPN family of networks.

Illinois won the Big Ten regular season championship, marking the 30th conference title in school history. The Fighting Illini will make their 11th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and third in the past five years.
