Big Ten writers' 2014 preseason All-Big Ten Team

With Big Ten media days Monday and Tuesday in Chicago, BTN.com asked one writer from every school to help compose our 2014 preseason All-Big Ten Team. Each writer picked a first-team offense and defense, plus superlative winners, and the players who amassed the most overall votes, by position, made the team.

Pretty typical biased Big Ten list. Look at some of those choices. Good lord do these people even watch the Big Ten or do they have Ohio State/Michigan blinders on. (notice the lack of a question mark, it was intentional) Here is the real first team from someone that actually knows the Big Ten.

Quarterback – Christian Hackenberg – Without a doubt, Hack is the best Big Ten QB since Kerry Collins.
Running Back – Braxton Miller – The Big Ten’s best running back thinks he is a quarterback but has Reggie Bush’s leg’s and Tim Tebow’s (complete lack of) arm.
Fullback – Zack Zwinak
Wide Receiver – Stefon Diggs
Wide Receiver – Geno Lewis
Wide Receiver – Devin Funchess
Tight End – Jesse James
Tight End – Kyle Carter
Tackle – Brandon Scherff
Tackle – Devin Smith
Guard – Zac Epping
Guard – Kyle Costigan
Center – Jack Allen

Defensive End – Shalique Calhoun
Defensive End – Randy Gregory
Defensive Tackle – Michael Bennett
Defensive Tackle – Austin Johnson
Linebacker – Mike Hull
Linebacker – Chi Chi Ariguzo
Linebacker – Taiwan Jones
Safety – Adrian Amos
Safety – Kurtis Drummond
Corner – Jordan Lucas
Corner – Blake Countess

When ever you promote a list of Big 10 Writers, name the writers.

Brent Yarina, BTN.com Senior Editor on 7/26/2014 @ 5:00pm EDT Said:

Ben – They are all listed at the bottom of the past.

Hans67 on 7/26/2014 @ 1:43pm EDT Said:

For those who were watching, how many times did Ohio State and Stanford throw at Trae Waynes in the championship and Rose Bowl games? How did they do when they did?

Mike on 7/26/2014 @ 2:34pm EDT Said:

Big Ten Fan – I’m going to go out on a limb and say you are a PSU fan. Hahaha. Biggest homer list I have ever seen. Do you have 8 PSU players in the first team, or did I miss a few?

twoticketstoparadise20 on 7/26/2014 @ 5:53pm EDT Said:

Maybe pick a little less of a homer next time for the Penn State representative? 5 PSU players and not one of them was a consensus pick. Laughable. I think only OSU’s writer had as many but four of those were consensus picks and that team is a little more talented than Penn State’s.

At least he managed to avoid the temptation of tabbing Hackenberg, although he made up for that with the inexplicable choice of Lippett over Diggs, which I’m not sure even Lippett himself would do. Maybe he got confused and thought Lippett was a Penn State player?

Big Ten Fan on 7/26/2014 @ 7:04pm EDT Said:

Why wouldn’t I? Penn State has the top group of starters in the Big Ten. Hackenberg is without question the top QB. James and Carter are easily the top two tight ends. Geno Lewis is the top returning deep threat. Lucas is on everyone’s watch list. Amos is a proven play maker. Mike Hull was only as good as all world Chris Borland while playing at 75% last year. Every Penn Stater I put on there is a not brainer first or second team.

Mike on 7/26/2014 @ 8:36pm EDT Said:

Keep drinking the kool aid, buddy. Haha. Don’t let the fact that you have nothing to justify the assertion that they are “no brainer first or second team” stop you.

Ian Waters on 7/26/2014 @ 9:14pm EDT Said:

The contributer from Maryland OG no Brandon Scherff, he must have missed the bus, or is still focused on ACC teams, LMAO

Ian Waters on 7/26/2014 @ 9:21pm EDT Said:

My bad he’s got him list at OT which is right, :)

Josh on 7/26/2014 @ 9:25pm EDT Said:

Penn State got waxed by IU! They are awful right now.

hogkaponya on 7/26/2014 @ 9:34pm EDT Said:

Have B1G followers become so elitist that IU’s top notch offense cannot get one preseason 1st team- er? …What that (omission)says to me is either :

A.) IU plays better TEAM offense than any B1G school at the cost of individual success.

B.) A lot of B1G Football followers need a reality check……. OR

C.) Both

The Indiana offense itself is perhaps the most under-rated platoon in the nation … Having a bad defense holding you back deservedly “robs” from team greatness ,BUT apparently gets a player screwed out of individual recognition on the side of the ball they have little control over….Does the fact of Indiana having issues with sustaining time consuming drives warrant being overlooked from 1st team lists each year? That is about the only way offensive guys can directly “control ” defensive factors.

I have yet to hear a well detailed and factually based counter point that holds water in regards to this phenomena .It defies logic at times – like our defense has somehow managed to do each year.Lol

In the same breath of realism the IU defense based on past results has only one guy(Tim Bennett) who barely garners all conf honorable mention IMO. So bash me for calling a spade a spade..Dare to be a fool ;) LMBO !

Dave Dorn on 7/26/2014 @ 9:56pm EDT Said:

Someone want to let the Maryland Representative know that Wisconsin is in the Big 10, or is he just waiting to witness it firsthand, not one single Badger on his list, clueless for a writer, probably has a vote for the Heisman as well, shows how inept some writers really are. Even if he only took Melvin Gordon, I would have no problem, but his/her picks are whacked imo.

josh on 7/27/2014 @ 6:29am EDT Said:

Big talk from the psu. We’ll see the record at the end of the year. #gobucks

NO MORE HOKE PLEASE I CAN'T TAKE IT on 7/27/2014 @ 6:42am EDT Said:

Complete swing and a miss on Coach of the Year. The best coach in the conference, and arguably the entire country, has to be Mark Dantonio. Urban Meyer is getting by simply on the weight carried by his name, but Dantonio is a better coach. Why do I say this? Because he has been beating down my Wolverines for the better half of a decade.

NO MORE HOKE PLEASE I CAN'T TAKE IT on 7/27/2014 @ 6:43am EDT Said:

Not to mention producing one of the most competitive groups in the country with less than half of OSU’s recruiting yield.

Shawn on 7/27/2014 @ 11:56am EDT Said:

Dantonio has had time to develop his players in his system. Not too mention he has one of the best defensive coordinators in the game. Let’s wait and see how this year plays out before passing judgement. 1 great season doesn’t make him the best coach in the country.

Scott on 7/27/2014 @ 8:03pm EDT Said:

Ohio State has one returning starter on its offensive line. I am surprised Taylor Decker did not get a vote from anyone.

B1Gfan MI on 7/27/2014 @ 11:06pm EDT Said:

We will gladly take Hoke and the outstanding recruits that Michigan will field in the coming season. Quiet confidence is growing in Schembechler Hall. No “conjured” up attention is necessary in the ultimate TEAM sport.

Darwin on 7/28/2014 @ 9:15am EDT Said:

Not one Iowa TE, Once again this year it’s the BIG 2 Network, Ohio State, Michigan!!!!!

Chaz on 7/28/2014 @ 10:36am EDT Said:

With out a doubt, Hackenberg is 3rd team Big Ten at best. Great quarterbacks do not usually go to Penn State.

Wezilsnout on 7/28/2014 @ 10:55am EDT Said:

Nice show of class by the OSU writer nominating Fitzgerald as coach of the year. I don’t understand so many picks for Braxton Miller as offensive player of year; both MSU and PSU have better QB’ s. Not that Miller isn’t a really good college quarterback. Gordon of UW will be offensive player of the year and possibly the Heisman winner. And I agree with the criticism of the Maryland writer; the guy is out to lunch.

hunterhawke on 7/29/2014 @ 9:56pm EDT Said:

I get a kick out of the comments here. There are some good arguments and some…well…you’ve all nailed that one down pretty well. Having said that, I have no problem with anyone picked by these writers because it means absolutely nothing. It’s fun to debate in late July, but it’s really all just opinion and speculation until the balls start flying a little over a month from now. Some players will come from nowhere to wow the whole viewing crowd. Others will fail to live up to expectations. Still others – though I sincerely hope it doesn’t happen to anyone on these lists – will experience injuries that will hamper them the better part of the season. It’s football. It happens. Let’s rewrite this list in late November and see how it compares. That’s the one that will mean a little something. Best of luck to the B1G programs this fall. I hope they can silence the skeptics and put together a really entertaining season!

john thomsen on 8/16/2014 @ 10:52am EDT Said:

Here’s a little known fact, Gordon (Wisconsin), Epping (Minnesota) and Waynes (Michigan State) are all from Kenosha WI. There must be sometime in the water or the program in the city.
