Video: Huskers win on last-second Hail Mary

Nebraska third-string quarterback Ron Kellogg III orchestrated arguably the most ridiculous finish of the 2013 college football season Saturday. Down 24-21, and on his final attempt to rally the Huskers, Kellogg III unleashed a deep Hail Mary that was deflected by a Northwestern defender and fell right into Jordan Westerkamp‘s arms for a 49-yard game-winner.

Incredible. Again, this was a third-string quarterback. The receiver? A redshirt freshman with zero touchdowns.

But Kellogg III made it happen, first by avoiding the rush, and then by having enough on the throw – delivered from his own 43-yard line – to get it to the end zone.

“Just heave it as far as I can, I guess,” Kellogg III said in his BTN postgame interview.

But none of this would have been possible if it wasn’t for Ameer Abdullah’s fourth-down heroics:

Bobby Martins, that’s about the response I would expect from someone who spells “probably” as “probally”.

Am I the only one who has been watching this play all weekend? Great win to an, otherwise, mediocre game.

Mediocre? Really. And I take issue with the writer’s word “ridiculous.” Please. The “hail, Mary” in-your-face call wasn’t ridiculous or a fluke, but a (traditional) practiced and deliberate gutsy I-believe-in-my-team call with Westerkamp deliberately in place. And what a great reward for RK III, one of a long-line of Nebraska walk-ons who sacrifice hours and years of work for Nebraska. We love them! You rock, RK III!

Not forgetting Ameer Abdullah. See you in the pros!

Brent Yarina, BTN.com Senior Editor on 11/4/2013 @ 9:58pm EDT Said:

Linda – Ridiculous, in that it was a ridiculous finish. I wasn’t saying the play call was ridiculous or implying that it was a fluke.

Linda Deeds on 11/4/2013 @ 10:44pm EDT Said:

Thanks for our reply. I teach college writing. “Ridiculous” means laughable — “of a kind to promote laughter or sometimes derision.” No way was that finish laughable or worthy of derision. The fans’ response was, as RK III said, “thunder” in the stadium.

And, contrary to much of the media, we Nebraskans love our fiery Coach Bo, his assistants and every last one of the players. Win or lose, they are ours.
