Michigan State denies Branden Dawson punch

Earlier Saturday, BTN aired a clip of Michigan State’s Branden Dawson possibly throwing a punch at Purdue’s Travis Carroll during Saturday afternoon’s game. Since then, Michigan State has reviewed the tape from different angles, and said it doesn’t appear Dawson threw a punch. Watch our video of the play in question now.

Michigan State sports information director Matt Larson sent the following in an email:

“The angle of Branden Dawson that BTN had during the broadcast certainly makes it look like there might have been a punch. However, I’ve viewed an angle from underneath the basket and that does not appear to be the case.”

Dawson wound up in a punching motion, but punched himself. If he had indeed punched Carroll, Carroll would have been flattened

MSU has more than the TV film to go on. They have film from an end zone view. They reportedly looked at it and saw no punch. #MSU

What is wrong with you people? How about a better angle so we can see this “punch” making contact…oh yeah that’s right, you can’t because there was NO contact. The fact is, Dawson did NOT throw a punch…he was fist pumping in reaction to the steal and made 3-pointer by Harris. BTN should be ashamed of themselves.

YngBld on 1/5/2013 @ 6:15pm EDT Said:

MSU spokesman Matt Larson says multiple angles of Dawson-Carroll encounter were reviewed and it was determined no punch was thrown.

Mr. Tanfan on 1/5/2013 @ 6:28pm EDT Said:

Man, the BTN is pathetic. Slandering its own student athletes? If anything, it looks like he is hitting his own chest in celebration. For one thing, Carroll certainly doesn’t react like someone who was punched, or had a punch thrown at them. Moreover, there is no reason for Dawson to throw a punch, and he has no history of dirty play. There is also no evidence of Dawson’s arm extending. Then, of course, MSU has said it reviewed much better angles and no punch was thrown.

But sure, let’s stir up some controversy, then figure out the details later. Pretty sad. No reason to use responsible journalism, here. This is only the conference’s own network.

Joe Gerace on 1/5/2013 @ 6:36pm EDT Said:

How about a view that shows he clearly doesn’t make contact? I keep hearing there is video of it but nothing is being shown. It’s a two way street YngBld. If he was just fist pumping why does he turn and glare at Carroll right after. Seems pretty weird to be so aggravated after being happy and pumped up not 5 seconds before. I think it’s more likely he wasn’t happy about being moved from under the basket and his fist pump was a shot that he followed up with the “I’m a bad ass” glare.

I would give Branden Dawson the benefit of the doubt if not for his actions when these teams played last year. The fact that Izzo and MSU twice chose not to discipline Dawson for his actions against Purdue shows they have forgone their reputation as a class program for the sake of winning.

He didnt hit his chest, that much I can see but 100% nope. If Carroll says he was hit, that will be the answer.

Sarah Wright on 1/5/2013 @ 9:09pm EDT Said:

If he didn’t throw a punch, then why the stare down from Dawson afterwards and why did Travis Carroll react the way he did? I don’t know if this is conclusive, but until other evidence surfaces, it looks like he threw a punch.

Mr. Tanfan on 1/5/2013 @ 10:01pm EDT Said:

Guilty to proven innocent! You Purdue fans are a trip. Like anyone owes you proof of anything. You’re so deluded you’d just claim the video was doctored. But then again, when you haven’t made a Final Four in 32 years, you have to find something to get behind. And when you’re the fourth best basketball program in your own state, you have to stoop this low.

And Tommy Boy, I am not sure how trash talking a coach is a history of dirty play, let alone punching another player.

I thought Indiana was supposed to have great basketball fans. Maybe when people say that they mean IU has great basketball fans. They’re the only fans that matter in your state anyway.

PurdueFan on 1/5/2013 @ 10:31pm EDT Said:

@Tom Clark Oh noes! Not talking trash! @Sarah Wright They stared each other down because Dawson was probably talking trash to him. You generally look at someone when you talk to them, don’t you?

Looks like a punch from the angle shown. If it was indeed innocent, I am sure the evidence can be presented to exonerate Dawson. I don’t believe people or MSU merely making an assertion as to the contents of something unseen at this point. Let me judge with my own eyes one way or the other.

Dale on 1/5/2013 @ 11:29pm EDT Said:

No question from the video that he threw a punch. The question is whether he actually struck Carroll with the punch or not, that is where this video is inconclusive. If there is another angle available, they need to release it.

JAZ1142 on 1/6/2013 @ 3:05am EDT Said:

He reacts exactly like he just got punched. He looks incredulous and then points to the refs like did you see that? I wish MSU would just release their ‘footage from under the basket’. If only to clear the name of one of their student athletes.

K on 1/6/2013 @ 8:31am EDT Said:

Dawson did not sucker punch Carroll, if you watch the ball in Carroll’s hands it seems pretty obvious that Dawson punched the ball out of his hands. Not very sportsmanlike sure, but that was why he received a technical foul. Also if you watch Carroll come in for the box out you can see why Dawson wasn’t particularly happy with him.

Sebastian Roman (@sebassroman) on 1/6/2013 @ 9:09am EDT Said:

Bruce on 1/6/2013 @ 12:24pm EDT Said:

MSU could end this controversy instantly by providing the tape with the angle from under the basket. The fact that they haven’t clouds the credibility of their response. It is in MSU’s interest to demonstrate this as the image of their sports programs have really taken a hit the last few years.

matt on 1/6/2013 @ 12:48pm EDT Said:

You don’t even have to see his fist to know that it was a punch. First of all, who chest bumps himself that vigorously after a teammate does something positive? Second, watch what Dawson does before the punch. He looks right at Carroll, steps back, plants his foot, cocks his arm, and twists his hips as his arm goes forward. If it were a celebratory thump, he would have probably jumped up or maybe leaned his upper body toward TC and brought his forearm right to his chest. Nobody braces himself like that and does a big roundhouse self-bump. It’s ridiculous. I don’t care if it landed or not – and Carrol’s left shoulder shrugging upward at the 16-17 second mark sure makes it look like it landed or awfully close — that’s a thrown punch.

Bruce, why in any way is MSU obligated to placate the vocal minority of a whiny fanbase that, after every time MSU blows them out, takes to twitter & online message boards to talk about how dirty MSU is?

The only people to whom the MSU Athletic Dept & basketball team have to answer to are the heads of MSU, and the Big Ten Conference & NCAA. I’m certain if any of those authorities requested the tape, MSU would turn it over. In the meantime, expecting schools to even acknowledge the complaining we see from the Purdue fanbase (or any other fanbase), is an example of the inmates feeling they run the asylum. The absolute last people MSU owes anything to are these Purdue fans.

Terone Johnson needs to be suspended for attacking Dawson in the MSU huddle. This happened at least a minute after the Harris basket & Dawson arm move.

Whether or not Dawson threw a punch, there is absolutely no excuse for Johnson trying to engage Dawson. He and Raphael Davis literally had to be restrained by the officials & MSU grad assistants, and a third Purdue player attempts to get involved, too, but has his path blocked by the refs.

I really hope the Big Ten makes at least Johnson & Davis pay for that. Under no circumstances is it acceptable to force your way into the other team’s huddle during a timeout and attempt to fight one of their players. Those guys need to sit a game each, minimum.

Bruce on 1/6/2013 @ 7:19pm EDT Said:

Daddy, you are right. MSU doesn’t owe anyone anything. They are the one’s who said they had a video. Why say even that? Since they said it they should produce it. Spartan in WI, your arguments are so terrible.

“Terone Johnson needs to be suspended for attacking Dawson in the MSU huddle.”
This did not happen. Unless MSU has a second angle of this incident in their vault too. If Johnson would have attacked Dawson, he would’ve thrown a patented Dawson Right Hook. But he didn’t. He just got in his face.

Secondly, this argument is just embarassing…
“Whether or not Dawson threw a punch, there is absolutely no excuse for Johnson trying to engage Dawson.”

And to the comments about furnishing this video. I honestly don’t need to see the video, because I know from watching MSU the type of class act Dawson is. But I agree with Bruce, if you say you have a video, and don’t show it, then you better be ready to deal with comments and eager fans wanting to see the video. I’m not saying that MSU OWES it to Purdue fans, but c’mon. If you look at this situation and don’t see anything wrong with Dawson’s actions or MSU’s (lack of) handling the situation, then you’re at the very least, naive.

I agree with Spartan in WI, I watched the replay of the game and its obvious that Tyrone Johnson ran to the the huddle and tried to go after Dawson. He didn’t get in the huddle because the refs and coaches stopped him. Purdue people keep saying Dawson should be suspended because it looks like he tried to punch Caroll, even though he didn’t touch him. So TJ should be suspended for trying to attack Dawson, even though he got restrained and couldn’t.

Johnson was probably just pissed because MSU was destroying Purdue by over 20, again, and he was shooting something like 3 -16 at that point. Someone who is that bad at losing shouldn’t be at Purdue, where he will experience a lot of that. He’s lost more than hrs won already.

Doug on 1/7/2013 @ 4:22pm EDT Said:

Wow, just a ton of purdue fans bitter because Dawson decided he wanted to go to final fours at MSU rather than play at purdue and win maybe one tournament game.

slim on 1/7/2013 @ 4:55pm EDT Said:

Purdue fans are NOT bitter about Dawson going to MSU, we’re actually glad he did. We don’t want guys like him in our program. Whether or not a punch was thrown or landed is not the question, what Dawson’s intent was is all that’s important. It seems obvious that he meant to provoke and intimidate Purdue players, period. That should not be allowed in any program. If Izzo really cared he would sit him out in the game in WL just to prevent any repercussions. Dawson is making his own bed, since the story went national he is going to be watched closely. Only a matter of time before a punk like him messes up again. Can’t wait to see him suspended!

IlliniFTW on 1/7/2013 @ 5:20pm EDT Said:

I will be quite surprised and disappointed if the B1G doesn’t suspend Dawson. Even if the punch didn’t land, intent was clearly there. MSU fans are in unreal denial. From what I have observed, pretty much 75-80% of people nationwide think it’s a punch.

B1G rulers…the nation is watching you. Are you going to let someone off the hook for throwing a punch (or at the very least, intent) during a game? Sad, sad day if so.

John on 1/7/2013 @ 6:03pm EDT Said:

To me the bigger question is about the referee under the basket. What did he see, or more importantly missed seeing? I would think at the very least Dawson’s action would be considered unsportsmanlike, yet the referee did nothing, not even warning Dawson. BTN needs to question his thought process as Dawson’s action directly lead to an escalation between the teams. IMO that escalation could have been avoided.

Paul on 1/7/2013 @ 6:06pm EDT Said:

This non-punch landed just as much as the “elbow” that Anthony Johnson “threw” and was rewarded with a technical foul for.Dawson should clearly be suspended.

Doug on 1/7/2013 @ 7:08pm EDT Said:

You don’t want Dawson on your team? Yeah right with that joke of a team you got now, you would love someone with his talent. That punk Kramer was as dirty as they came for 4 years, and all you Purdue fans loved him. Hypocrites ! Izzo and MSU don’t have to listen to a bunch of bitter Purdue fans, you guys are unreal !

Spartan in WI on 1/7/2013 @ 7:19pm EDT Said:

Don’t forget Brian Cardinal before Kramer.

Also, Terone Johnson and Raphael Davis absolutely should be suspended for entering the MSU huddle, during a timeout, and attempting to physically engage Spartan players.

It doesn’t matter what may have provoked them. The NCAA has hard rules stating that players shall be ejected for leaving their bench, ejected and suspended if they leave the bench for a fight, and also, ejected and suspended if they enter the other team’s bench outside of the normal course of play (like tripping and falling into it). NCAA Basketball Rule 10, A.R. 279

Doug – if Purdue didn’t want Dawson on their team, how come they recruited him so hard, and went so crazy when he committed to MSU? If you don’t believe me, check out the Purdue Rivals site, Black and Gold, for message boards around early August, 2010.

It’s incredible how quickly the theme of those comments went from how great Dawson is and how perfect a fit he is for the Boilers, then starting 8/4/10, how Dawson immediately became a thug not fit to breathe the same air as Matt Painter or even look at Robbie Hummel’s knees

Now, two full days later, the conference has come out and said nothing happened, and Dawson will not be punished.

I’ve looked and the only comment I can find from the Big was from Izzo. Painter has said nothing to date, nor Carroll, that I can find as of today. My take is that this is done and it is time to move on. MSU had the opportunity to demonstrate that they were doing the right thing with credibility but chose not to. That is thier right, they have no obligation to anyone other than themselves, the Big, and the NCAA. IMHO MSU complicated everything by saying they had a different video but not producing it for the general public to see. Again, MSU had no obligation to share data with anyone else. They chose to make a public statement in an attempt to end the controversy but chose not to release the tape.. Their choice. All fans will continue to believe what they want because there is no definitive information. Branden Dawson is a very talented player. So was Ron Artest, Dennis Rodman, Bill Lambier, Latrell Sprewell, etc. I hope Branden doesn’t become one of these guys. One thing I can guarantee is that on Feb 9th Painter will have worked with his team to control the emotions to avoid problems. I wish I had the same confidence in Izzo to do the same.

Bruce on 1/8/2013 @ 8:22pm EDT Said:

Spartan in WI, you really need to get your eyes checked, dude. The Purdue players had to walk past the MSU huddle to get to their own. MSU brought their huddle onto the floor. They never were at MSU’s bench, not even close.

Dawson through a punch, no doubt about it. Even his own description is that he hit Carroll’s arm off of himself. MSU should take ownership that they have a hot-head and suspend him themselves. Dawson has a history of this crap.

The Big Ten needs to resolve this, for fear that someone will take matters into their own hands. He says that he is a good guy, but there is no evidence of it.

Spartan in WI on 1/9/2013 @ 3:52pm EDT Said:

Dale – You need to re-think the “eyes checked” comment. When do you think Terone Johnson rushed into the huddle? It wasn’t immediately after that shot, as you Purdue people contend (just another example of Purdue people making up “facts” to fit their narrative).

Harris hit that shot that Dawson celebrated with an arm pump, with ~6:55 left on the game clock. If you don’t believe me, look at the clock in the video clip above. After that, Carroll inbounded the ball, Purdue went down the court and missed on their possession, like usual. MSU (Dawson, actually) got the rebound, and outletted to Travis Trice to start a break. Trice was fouled, and a TV timeout was called at 6:30 – 25 seconds of game clock after the Harris make.

MSU and Purdue then went to their respective huddles, and during the TV timeout, Terone Johnson ran over and attempted to assault Dawson in the huddle. At that point, he was literally physically restrained by the officials and MSU grad assistants. Raphael Davis ran in after him, and tried to go after an MSU assistant that was helping the refs hold back Johnson & order him back to his huddle. While Johnson & Davis were still barking at the wall of MSU grad assistants that had by then formed, a third player (I can’t tell his number) tried to run over, but was blocked by the refs.

All of this happened during the TV timeout, and was replayed by the broadcast coming out of the timeout. If you still have this game on your DVR, it happened close to two hours into the recording, like at about 1:57. And by the replay that BTN showed out of the timeout, it was clear that MSU’s huddle had formed, the Purdue players were on their end of the court, and Johnson ran back in.

I’m sure the BTN, which owns this very forum in which we’re having this discussion, can also throw up a clip of that part.

    Bruce on 1/9/2013 @ 6:36pm EDT Said:

Dale, you are not even close in your description of what is on the recording. Terone Johnson did not rush into th huddle to assualt anyone as you say. First Raf Daviswas walking to th Purdue huddle and said something to Dawson who turned around quickly and came after Davis. No one was IN the MSU huddle. No one attempted to assualt anyone. Then TJ said someting to Dawson and Dawson came after TJ who did not back away as Davis did. That is when the MSU assistans pushed TJ away. . Anthony Johnson then grabbed TJ and pushed him even further away. TJ then went to the Purdue bench and was very demonstrative in showing that Dawson had thrown a punch. You can read TJ’s lips when he said “he hit him”. I suggest that you look at that part of the video. Nothing is accurate that you said, nothing. Have you read Dawson’s actual explanation of what happened. “No, I didn’t hit him,” Dawson said. “He had lunged into me and his arm, we were like both locked. He had his arm locked in my arm and I just came around and I just, you know, tried to knock him off.” This was a quote from the Detroit Free Press, Dale. Again if you view the tape you will see bythe time Dawson swung his arm they were no longer entangled, they were clearly seperated. So… MSU lied about the chest thump. Dawson lied about being entangled……and it is what it is. and the beat goes on. msu, msu, msu
