Iowa State edges Iowa, 9-6
Iowa State was held scoreless in the second half. But the Hawkeyes (1-1) could only muster a pair of short field goals in the lowest-scoring matchup between these instate rivals in 24 years.
James Vandenberg was 20 of 42 passing for 236 yards and two interceptions for Iowa.
FINAL: Iowa State took home a 9-6 win over Iowa thanks to Steele Jantz and Aaron Horne, who led the passing attack for the Cyclones on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium. Iowa was driving late but a late Cyclones interception sealed the win.
Jantz hit Horne for 73 yards on six catches.
Iowa State’s offense turned the ball over four times. The Cyclones overcame their mistakes however, and gained 355 total yards in the victory. The Cyclones’ defense stood tall on third downs, holding the Hawkeyes to a 29.4 percent success rate on third down.
Iowa State couldn’t slow Iowa’s offense but held when it needed it the most. The Cyclones surrendered 305 total yards.
The Cyclones’ Jantz passed for 241 yards, completing 24 of 36 throws. He tossed one touchdown and two interceptions. Jantz also ran for 35 yards on 15 attempts. James White was the player Jantz targeted most often. He hauled in seven catches for 65 yards.
