BTN Wrestling Report: A Look Back

Minnesota and Penn State clinched shares of the Big Ten wrestling regular season dual-meet title and each finished with a 7-1 record. Penn State’s seven wins are the most in school history. And Minnesota won its last dual season in 2007, when they also won the National Title. Watch now as BTN wrestling analysts Tim Johnson and Jim Gibbons offer a look back on the season. Additionally, BTN’s coverage of the Big Ten Wrestling Championships will be carried live at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 4, from the campus of Purdue University.

As a long time fan of wrestling as well as a wrestling coach’s wife, wrestler’s mom and a USA Wrestling pairing official, I was appalled by the lack of wrestling knowledge displayed by the announcers of the Penn State/Nebraska match. We are wrestlers not players and we wrestle…we don’t play. The two gentlemen announcing had not a clue. The did not know what constituted a takedown, how one gets nearfall points, or an escape…it was laughable and very embarassing. Our sport…the greatest sport in the world takes a beating at best, we can’t afford to present such a showing.
