No disrespect to the Wisconsin football team, which advanced to its second consecutive Rose Bowl, but the Badger men's cross country team highlighted the school's 2011-12 athletic year. The Badgers took their 13th consecutive Big Ten title, posting the second-lowest team score in history (17), and won the NCAA crown, the Big Ten's first since 2005. Along the way, Mohammed Ahmed set a Big Ten record 8K time (23:18) at Big Ten Championship and won Big Ten Athlete of the Year, while Mick Byrne won Big Ten Coach of the Year and National Coach of the Year.

Other Wisconsin highlights from the 2011-12 athletic year:
- Football won the first Leaders Division crown, took the inaugural Big Ten Football Championship Game and advanced to its second consecutive Rose Bowl; Montee Ball scored a Big Ten-record 34 touchdowns and was a Heisman Trophy finalist.
- Basketball made its 14th consecutive NCAA tourney and advanced to its second straight Sweet 16, where it lost to No.1 seed Syracuse.
- Women's soccer senior Michele Dalton earned Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year.
- Men's track and field rallied for the Big Ten crown, its first since 2007; Ed Nuttycombe won his 21st Big Ten Coach of the Year honor; sophomore Japheth Cato won Big Ten Field Athlete of the Year.
- Women's hockey advanced to the national championship game, where it fell to rival Minnesota; junior Briana Decker won the 2012 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, the third Badger in the last four seasons to do so.
