Colter, 'Cats Put Away Eastern Illinois

(AP) Kain Colter delivered again while filling in for star Dan Persa, running for a career-high 109 yards with three touchdowns and throwing for 104 more to lead Northwestern to a 42-21 victory over Eastern Illinois on Saturday. With Persa in uniform but still recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon, Colter came through with another impressive performance after leading the Wildcats to a 24-17 win at Boston College in the opener. The sophomore wound up with more than 100 yards rushing for the second time in his career. When he wasn’t running by the Panthers (1-1), he completed 10 of 13 passes without an interception to lead Northwestern (2-0) to an easy win over an FCS opponent. Ohio State Fends Off Toledo

(AP) Chris Fields returned a punt 69 yards and Carlos Hyderan for two more scores to lead No. 15 Ohio State past Toledo 27-22 Saturday, a win that was secure only after the Buckeyes held the Rockets’ on their last drive. The Rockets (1-1) drove from their own 28 to the Ohio State 17 before backup quarterback Terrance Owens threw incomplete on fourth down while being pressured by John Simon. Ohio State (2-0) has not lost to another Ohio team since 1921. The Buckeyes are 43-0-1 since that 7-6 setback to Oberlin. Iowa State Tops Iowa in Triple Overtime

(AP) James White’s 4-yard TD run in triple overtime pushed Iowa State past rival Iowa 44-41 on Saturday, snapping a three-game losing streak to the rival Hawkeyes in thrilling fashion. Steele Jantz led the way for Iowa State (2-0) with 279 yards passing and four touchdowns and White added a pair of OT touchdowns. White’s 1-yard run put the Cyclones on top 38-31 in double overtime, but Iowa quarterback James Vandenberg‘s 23-yard TD pass to Keenan Davis tied it back up. Iowa went ahead 41-38 on Mike Meyer’s 41-yard field goal. But the Hawkeyes defense had no answer for Jantz and White in extra time. Wilson, Wisconsin Blank Oregon State

(AP) Russell Wilson threw three touchdowns and No. 8 Wisconsin overcame a slow start from its running game to beat Oregon State 35-0 at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday. With Oregon State’s defense stuffing running backs Montee Ball and James White early on, Wisconsin pounced on special teams mistakes and leaned on Wilson and the defense to do the rest. In his second career start for the Badgers (2-0), Wilson was 17 of 21 for 189 yards and the three touchdowns, including a pair to tight end Jacob Pedersen. Illinois Throttles South Dakota St., 56-3

(AP) Freshman running back Donovonn Young introduced himself to Illinois fans with a pair of touchdowns and Nathan Scheelhaase ran for two more on Saturday in a 56-3 blowout over South Dakota State. Illinois (2-0) rolled up 519 yards of offense and allowed just 96. Young scored on a 2-yard run to give the Illini a 7-0 lead. The Houston native showed speed and strength on a 41-yard second-quarter touchdown that put the Illini up 35-3 over the Jackrabbits (1-1) at the half. Scheelhaase took a seat in the third quarter with 93 yards rushing and 102 passing yards on six completions. Illinois’ defense picked off South Dakota State quarterback Thomas O’Brien twice. Michigan State Shuts Out Florida Atlantic

 (AP) Kirk Cousins threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 17 Michigan State held Florida Atlantic to one first down in a 44-0 victory over the Owls on Saturday. B.J. Cunningham caught five passes for 73 yards, breaking a tie with Matt Trannon for Michigan State’s career lead in receptions. The Spartans (2-0) led 27-0 at halftime and ended up outgaining FAU 434-48. The Owls (0-2) have scheduled a brutal opening month. They opened at Florida and play at Auburn in two weeks.
