No. 1 Illinois Holds Off Michigan

No. 1 Illinois continued its winning ways on Wednesday, defeating No. 20 Michigan 3-1 (25-14, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20) at Huff Hall. The Illini out-blocked the Wolverines 17-3, led by freshman Liz McMahon with 11 block assists. The Illini are now 18-0 overall and 7-0 in the Big Ten, while the Wolverines fall to 14-5 overall and 2-5 in the Big Ten. Illinois’ Michelle Bartsch registered 20 kills. Michigan State Shuts out Michigan

The previous four matches in the rivalry’s history ended in ties, but Megan Marsack and Laura Heyboereach scored second-half markers to help Michigan State down Michigan, 2-0, at DeMartin Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Spartan keeper Jill Flietstra made five saves en route to tallying her seventh shutout of the season. With the win, Michigan State improved to 11-4, 4-3 in Big Ten play, while Michigan fell to 8-5-2 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play.
