Big Ten Names Players of the Week

On Monday morning, the Big Ten Conference announced its players of the week for Week 3. The honorees include four first-time winners, highlighted by Iowa’s James Vandenberg, the Offensive Player of the Week. Vandenberg threw for 162 of his 399 passing yards and for all three of his touchdown passes in a remarkable fourth quarter to help Iowa tally its largest comeback in school history. The junior quarterback also added a rushing score, for good measure, as the Hawkeyes rallied from a 21-point deficit against Pittsburgh.

Nebraska Wins First Big Ten Event

Some day it will be the answer to a trivia question. The Nebraska soccer team carded the school’s first Big Ten victory in its opening Big Ten Conference event Sunday afternoon. The Huskers, led by Morgan Marlborough’s hat trick, took down Northwestern, 3-1, at Nebraska Soccer Field (read the Huskers.com recap). It was a dramatic way for Nebraska to open its Big Ten career, but it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, as the Huskers are 16-1-0 in conference openers, all in the Big 12.

Iowa Steamrolls Missouri State, 10-2

The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated Missouri State, 10-2, Sunday at Grant Field. The 12th-ranked Hawkeyes move to 7-1 with the victory and extend their winning streak to six games. Iowa has outscored its opponents 32-6 during its win streak. The 10 goals against Missouri State mark the most the Hawkeyes have scored in a game since defeating Saint Louis, 12-0, on Sept. 19, 2009. Illinois Drops No. 18 Arizona State

(AP) Illinois sacked Arizona State’s Brock Osweiler six times and turned one into a touchdown in a 17-14 win over the No. 22 Sun Devils on Saturday night. With Illinois trailing 14-10 in the fourth quarter, defensive end Whitney Mercilus hit Osweiler in the back and knocked the ball loose to linebacker Ian Thomas. Four plays later, Nathan Scheelhaase hit A.J. Jenkins for a 16-yard touchdown that gave Illinois (3-0) the win. Scheelhaase was 11 of 15 for 135 yards. Miami (FL) Topples Ohio State, 24-6

(AP) Lamar Miller ran for 188 yards, Jacory Harris threw two first-quarter touchdown passes to Allen Hurns and Miami avoided matching its longest losing streak in 33 years by topping No. 17 Ohio State 24-6 on Saturday night. Ohio State quarterbacks Joe Bauserman and Braxton Miller combined to complete 4 of 17 passes for only 36 yards. The Buckeyes didn’t even bother to try and stop the clock despite having three timeouts with Miami driving in the final minutes with a 17-6 lead. Jordan Hall had 87 yards on 14 carries for the Buckeyes, who are now in danger now of falling out of the AP Top 25 for the first time in nearly seven years.
