Illinois Drops No. 18 Arizona State

(AP) Illinois sacked Arizona State’s Brock Osweiler six times and turned one into a touchdown in a 17-14 win over the No. 22 Sun Devils on Saturday night. With Illinois trailing 14-10 in the fourth quarter, defensive end Whitney Mercilus hit Osweiler in the back and knocked the ball loose to linebacker Ian Thomas. Four plays later, Nathan Scheelhaase hit A.J. Jenkins for a 16-yard touchdown that gave Illinois (3-0) the win. Scheelhaase was 11 of 15 for 135 yards. Miami (FL) Topples Ohio State, 24-6

(AP) Lamar Miller ran for 188 yards, Jacory Harris threw two first-quarter touchdown passes to Allen Hurns and Miami avoided matching its longest losing streak in 33 years by topping No. 17 Ohio State 24-6 on Saturday night. Ohio State quarterbacks Joe Bauserman and Braxton Miller combined to complete 4 of 17 passes for only 36 yards. The Buckeyes didn’t even bother to try and stop the clock despite having three timeouts with Miami driving in the final minutes with a 17-6 lead. Jordan Hall had 87 yards on 14 carries for the Buckeyes, who are now in danger now of falling out of the AP Top 25 for the first time in nearly seven years. Nebraska Tops Washington, 51-38

(AP) Taylor Martinez threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third, and No. 11 Nebraska held off Washington for a wild 51-38 victory on Saturday. Martinez looked to have put away the Huskies with his 6-yard TD run, but Keith Price passed 52 yards to James Johnson for his fourth TD toss to make it a 13-point game with 4:27 left. Nebraska (3-0) won the third meeting of the teams in 364 days. Nebraska won in Seattle last September but lost in a rematch at the Holiday Bowl. Minnesota Fends off Miami (OH)

(AP) Coach Jerry Kill returned to the Minnesota sideline one week after suffering a seizure during a game and watched Marqueis Gray rack up 334 total yards in a 29-23 victory over Miami (Ohio) on Saturday. Gray threw for 163 yards and rushed for 171 more and Duane Bennett blocked a punt and recovered in the end zone to hand Kill his first victory as coach of the Golden Gophers (1-2). Kill made it through the game without incident, a big relief to Gophers fans and his players who watched him collapse at the end of last week’s loss. Army Runs Past Northwestern, 21-14

(AP) Trent Steelman scored three touchdowns for the second straight week, including the game-winner on a 1-yard plunge with 2:49 remaining, and Army beat Northwestern 21-14 on Saturday. Steelman also scored on runs of 1 and 17 yards, and the swarming Army defense turned up the pressure in the second half. Malcolm Brown had a 23-yard gain on a pitch right for Army (1-2), Raymond Maples added a 17-yard run off a great fake in the middle of the line, and Scott Williams had a 17-yard run around the left side to key the game-winning drive. Indiana Takes Down SCSU, 38-21

(AP) Indiana’s Edward Wright-Baker threw for two touchdowns Saturday, and the Hoosiers rushed for 271 yards and three more scores to defeat South Carolina State 38-21. The victory gave new Indiana coach Kevin Wilson his first career win in three tries. Wright-Baker led the Hoosiers (1-2) by going 19 of 24 for 266 yards. He also rushed nine times for 33 yards. Freshman D’Angelo Roberts ran 19 times for 102 yards and scored his first career touchdown. Derrick Wiley kept the Bulldogs (1-2, 1-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) within striking distance of their first Big Ten opponent for most of the second half.
