Entering the 2011 college football season, Nebraska was the popular pick when it came to the Big Ten’s best defensive unit. With returning stars such as Jared Crick, Lavonte David and Alfonzo Dennard, among others, the Huskers boasted the talent, not to mention the coaching. "Jerry! Jerry!" Chants Fill Gophers' Locker Room

Two Saturdays ago, Minnesota head football coach Jerry Kill was taken off the field on a stretcher to “Jerry! Jerry!” chants. Kill returned to the field in Week 3, one week after suffering a seizure on the sideline, and recorded his first victory as Minnesota coach. When Kill entered the locker room following the team’s 29-23 victory, he once again heard the “Jerry! Jerry!” chants. This time, it was from his proud players. Pulse Preview: Another Crazy Comeback

The Big Ten has treated college football fans to a dynamic fourth-quarter comeback each of the past two weeks. Two weeks ago, it was Denard Robinson and Michigan coming back against Notre Dame. This past week, it was James Vandenberg and Iowa rallying past Pittsburgh for the greatest comeback in school history. At 7:30 ET Monday on the “Big Ten Pulse,” Rick Pizzo, Tim Doyle and Derek Rackley will discuss the latest comeback, talk about the rough Week 3 for a trio of Big Ten teams and interview Illinois’ Jonathan Brown. Big Ten Names Players of the Week

On Monday morning, the Big Ten Conference announced its players of the week for Week 3. The honorees include four first-time winners, highlighted by Iowa’s James Vandenberg, the Offensive Player of the Week. Vandenberg threw for 162 of his 399 passing yards and for all three of his touchdown passes in a remarkable fourth quarter to help Iowa tally its largest comeback in school history. The junior quarterback also added a rushing score, for good measure, as the Hawkeyes rallied from a 21-point deficit against Pittsburgh.

Nebraska Wins First Big Ten Event

Some day it will be the answer to a trivia question. The Nebraska soccer team carded the school’s first Big Ten victory in its opening Big Ten Conference event Sunday afternoon. The Huskers, led by Morgan Marlborough’s hat trick, took down Northwestern, 3-1, at Nebraska Soccer Field (read the Huskers.com recap). It was a dramatic way for Nebraska to open its Big Ten career, but it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, as the Huskers are 16-1-0 in conference openers, all in the Big 12.

Iowa Steamrolls Missouri State, 10-2

The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated Missouri State, 10-2, Sunday at Grant Field. The 12th-ranked Hawkeyes move to 7-1 with the victory and extend their winning streak to six games. Iowa has outscored its opponents 32-6 during its win streak. The 10 goals against Missouri State mark the most the Hawkeyes have scored in a game since defeating Saint Louis, 12-0, on Sept. 19, 2009.
