Big Ten Conference Games Are Back

And here we are at the first week of Big Ten Conference games with five Big Ten teams in the Coaches Top 25. A quick look ahead: Northwestern (2-1) at Illinois (4-0) (noon ET/ESPN2), Penn State (3-1) at Indiana (1-3) (noon/ESPNU), Minnesota (1-3) at Michigan (4-0) (noon ET/BTN), Michigan State (3-1) at Ohio State (3-1) (3:30 p.m./ABC), and Nebraska (4-0) at Wisconsin (4-0) (8 p.m./ABC). Iowa (3-1) has a bye and in non-conference games, it’s Notre Dame (2-2) at Purdue (2-1) (8 p.m./ESPN). How will the Legends and Leaders standings change by this time next week? Ohio State Tops Michigan in Overtime

Ohio State’s Chris Hegngi found the back of the net 34 seconds into overtime to lift the Buckeyes past archrival Michigan, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The defeat was the third straight overtime loss for the Wolverines. Michigan led 2-1 late in the second half, but Ohio State drew even at the 86:04 mark before striking quickly in the extra session to claim victory in the teams’ Big Ten opener.

Penn State Shuts Out Illinois, 1-0

Penn State used Ali Schaefer’s third goal of the weekend to propel the Nittany Lions to a 1-0 win over No. 22 Illinois on Sunday at Jeffrey Field. The Nittany Lions (9-3-0, 2-1-0 Big Ten) used a set piece to settle the score. Christine Nairn played a corner kick to Schaefer, who headed the ball to Whitney Church on the far post. Church moved around two Illini defenders and slotted a short ball to Schaefer who put it away from 15 yards out on the far left post in the 39th minute.

Minnesota Takes Down Northwestern

After trailing in the first set, the No. 9 Minnesota recovered and went on to earn a 3-1 win over Northwestern on Sunday afternoon at the Sports Pavilion. With the win, the Golden Gophers (8-3 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) earned their first conference victory of the 2011 campaign. Northwestern dropped to 9-4 overall and 0-2 in conference action. Ashley Wittman, who had 20 kills and 14 digs, led Minnesota in the win. Watch now a video recap from the match below and read the full game story in this post.
