Notre Dame Takes Down Purdue, 38-10

(AP) Michael Floyd had 12 catches for 137 yards and a touchdown to help Notre Dame defeat Purdue 38-10 on Saturday night. Cierre Wood ran for a career-high 191 yards, Jonas Gray rushed for 94 yards and Tommy Rees passed for 254 yards and three touchdowns for the Fighting Irish (3-2). Notre Dame outgained Purdue 551 yards to 276 in its most dominant performance of the season. It was a season-high yardage total for the Irish and their third game with at least 500 yards of offense. Caleb TerBush completed 10 of 15 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown for Purdue (2-2). But the Boilermakers also committed 13 penalties for 118 yards. Defense Propels Spartans Past Buckeyes

(AP) Kirk Cousins threw a 33-yard scoring pass to B.J. Cunningham and Michigan State’s No. 1-ranked defense overwhelmed Ohio State 10-7 Saturday, shutting out the Buckeyes until the final seconds. Michigan State (4-1, 1-0 Big Ten) came in as the national leader in total defense (172 yards per game) and passing defense (101 ypg) and almost matched those numbers. The Spartans allowed just 178 total yards and 143 yards through the air. The Buckeyes (3-2, 0-1), behind true freshman quarterback Braxton Miller, stumbled and bumbled all day on offense. Joe Bauserman led Ohio State to its only score, a 34-yard pass to Evan Spencer with 10 seconds left. The Spartans then recovered the onside kick. Illinois Rallies Past Northwestern

(AP) Nathan Scheelhaase scored a 1-yard touchdown with 13 seconds left Saturday to lead No. 24 Illinois to a 38-35 comeback win over Northwestern. The sophomore QB threw for a career-high 391 yards and three touchdowns for the Illini (5-0, 1-0). All three TD passes went to A.J. Jenkins, who had 12 catches for a school-record 268 yards. Scheelhaase had to engineer two comebacks to pull out the win over the Wildcats (2-2, 0-1). First, Illinois scored 21 unanswered points after Northwestern took a 28-10 third-quarter lead. Then Scheelhaase scored the game-winning touchdown after a late touchdown run by Jacob Schmidt gave the Wildcats a 35-31 with just over a minute to play. Perfect Michigan Rolls Minnesota

(AP) Denard Robinson threw two touchdown passes and ran for a TD to lead No. 19 Michigan in a 58-0 win over Minnesota. The Wolverines (5-0, 1-0 Big Ten) had their most lopsided win since beating Indiana by the same score in 2000. Vincent Smith scored on a run, pass and catch to help Michigan lead 38-0 at halftime. Robinson was 15 of 19 for 169 yards and didn’t throw an interception for the first time since the opener and had a season-low six rushing attempts for 51 yards. He was taken out in the third quarter. Freshman Max Shortell made his first start for the Gophers (1-4, 0-0) in place of MarQueis Gray, who missed the game with an injured toe on his left foot. Penn State Holds Off Indiana

(AP) Matt McGloin threw a 74-yard touchdown pass to Derek Moye late in the third quarter, leading Penn State to a 16-10 victory Saturday at Indiana. The Nittany Lions (4-1) won the schools’ Big Ten opener and improved to 15-0 all-time against the Hoosiers. Indiana (1-4) has lost two straight despite making a quarterback change Saturday. But it was Penn State’s backup quarterback who was the difference. After leading Penn State to a tying field goal late in the second quarter, McGloin re-entered the game late in the third and threw the TD pass to Moye on his first play. Saturday Night Volleyball Round-Up

The ninth-ranked Nittany Lions out-blocked 10th-ranked Minnesota on their way to a 3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 25-15) sweep on Saturday. Penn State improved to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in Big Ten action, while Minnesota dropped to 8-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
