Thanks to a mean rushing attack, No. 19 Michigan leads 7-3 at the end of the first quarter. The Wolverines rushed for 100 yards in the quarter. The Wolverines got on the scoreboard first, rattling off a two-play, 80-yard drive that ended in a score when Denard Robinson took a quarterback draw all the way for a 79-yard touchdown run.
Braxton Miller became the first Ohio State quarterback to rush for three touchdowns in 34 years and he passed for another score to lead the 14th-ranked Buckeyes to a 31-16 victory over Central Florida on Saturday. A week after setting a school quarterback record with 161 rushing yards in a 56-10 win over Miami (Ohio), Miller ran for 141 yards on 27 carries. His number kept coming up after starting running back Carlos Hyde left with a first-half knee injury.
MarQueis Gray threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more by halftime, and Minnesota finally enjoyed an easy victory over an FCS-level opponent by beating New Hampshire 44-7 on Saturday. Gray passed only eight times but completed six for 100 yards and scores to Isaac Fruechte and John Rabe. Gray also gained 109 yards on 17 rushing attempts, including a 75-yard untouched burst at the end of the first quarter.
Virginia’s Michael Rocco hit Jake McGee on a 6-yard touchdown pass with 1:28 to play Saturday, and Sam Ficken‘s fourth missed field goal of the game – from 42 yards at the gun – preserved the Cavaliers’ 17-16 victory over Penn State. The loss in new coach Bill O’Brien’s first road game hurt the Nittany Lions just as much, if not moreso, than their defeat last weekend at home against Ohio.
Braxton Miller had a productive quarter for Ohio State. He threw for 75 yards and one touchdown and ran for 29 yards and one touchdown, and the Buckeyes now lead 31-16. Ohio State added to its advantage when Miller threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jake Stoneburner, the final play on a 12-play, 76-yard drive to give the Buckeyes the lead, 24-10.
Minnesota held New Hampshire to 17 yards on the ground during the third quarter and the Golden Gophers now lead 37-7. Minnesota has scored the game’s last 28 points. The Gophers’ latest score came after marching down the field for a 16-play, 85-yard drive that ended when Donnell Kirkwood ran two yards to paydirt. Pass plays were an afterthought for Minnesota, as the Golden Gophers threw just three passes on that possession.
