Up until Saturday night, Illinois’ season has been described in strange terms. At that point, it was “surprising” that Illinois was undefeated. The Illini won the Maui Invitational, which was a very “prestigious” early-season tournament. This isn’t normally how one talks about an undefeated team that’s ranked in the top-15.
There were a total of seven Big Ten women’s basketball teams in action Sunday, including ranked Ohio State, Penn State and Purdue. No. 10 Penn State, the Big Ten’s highest-ranked team, blasted Georgetown, 97-74, behind Maggie Lucas’ career-high 39 points. Catch up on all the action in this post.
On the first Saturday sans Big Ten football, BTN aired five consecutive men’s basketball games. It all started at noon ET and came to an end just before 10:30 p.m. There were too many highlights to count during the 10-plus hours of action, but it’s safe to say none were bigger than Victor Oladipo and Sam Thompson’s ridiculous dunks.
Andrew Smith scored a season-high 24 points and Butler pulled away in the second half for a 74-65 win over Northwestern on Saturday night.

There are posterizing dunks, and then there is Victor Oladipo’s in-your-face slam from Saturday night. Oladipo, he of several highlight-reel dunks in his two-plus seasons (remember this one?), threw down perhaps the best poke of his career in the first half against Central Connecticut State. In transition, no one accounted for Oladipo, and he drove to the rim, where Terrell Allen went for the block. Needless to say, Allen didn’t get it.
Christian Watford scored 21 points, Cody Zeller had 19 points and 19 rebounds, and No. 1 Indiana routed Central Connecticut State 100-69 on Saturday. The Hoosiers (9-0) dominated on both ends of the floor.
