Two Big Ten women’s lacrosse teams advanced in the NCAA Tournament this weekend and both play again on Saturday for a spot in the Final Four. Northwestern beat Notre Dame 12-7 and Penn State knocked off Towson15-8. The Northwestern-Notre Dame game will re-air on BTN today at 5:30 p.m. ET and Saturday’s quarterfinals game against Duke will air live on BTN and BTN2Go at 8 p.m. ET.
Two Big Ten teams were selected to the NCAA Division I Softball Championship field, the NCAA selection committee announced Sunday. Five-time reigning Big Ten champ Michigan headlines the duo, while Northwestern earned an at-large berth into the tournament. Both teams begin competition Friday. View the NCAA interactive bracket.
Penn State baseball (27-24, 13-8) completed a weekend sweep with a 3-2 victory over the Illinois Fighting Illini on Sunday afternoon. Thanks to the win, Penn State remains one-half game behind Indiana for second place in the Big Ten. Senior Jordan Steranka led the way with three hits, two of which were doubles and one of those doubles scoring senior Joey DeBernardis. Iowa basketball legend Don Nelson made a name of for himself in the NBA but he was back at school on Saturday to accept his college degree at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. We touched on this story earlier this week but it’s worth revisiting. Nelson left Iowa in early summer 1962 to pursue his dreams as a professional basketball player but he left 10 credit hours short of a degree in physical education.
For the first time in 103 baseball seasons, the Purdue Boilermakers are at least Co-Big Ten Champions after beating Michigan, 14-3 on Saturday. The 1909 Boilermakers won the seven-team Big Ten with a 7-2 conference record. Purdue has come up short before finishing in second place in 2001, 2005 and 2008.
