Sparty takes handoff in Michigan State spring game

Spring games are great because they give fans a glimpse into what their teams will look like in the fall. But, lets face it, the games lack the excitement and entertainment of a real game. Saturday’s Michigan State game had a moment of great entertainment, though. Mark Dantonio made sure of it, as he put Sparty, Michigan State’s chiseled mascot, in the backfield and dialed up a running play. Let’s just say no one will confuse Sparty with Le’Veon Bell, because the mascot struggled on the play, losing yards and putting the ball on the ground. To be fair, the

Sideline Interviews: Ex-Spartans Jones & Worthy

The last time we saw former Michigan State star linebacker Greg Jones he was proposing to his girlfriend on the field following the New York Giants’ Super Bowl XLVI win. On Saturday, he was an honorary captain for Michigan State’s spring game at Spartan Stadium. Watch Lisa Byington’s interview with the two-time first team All American now. Also, Byington caught up with former Spartan star DT Jerel Worthy, who was selected by the Green Bay Packers on Friday. Watch Worthy’s interview in this post. And, as promised, here’s Worthy:

Saturday's Big Ten Softball Roundup

Illinois softball used a disciplined approach at the plate to secure a 5-1 victory over No. 22 Michigan in eight innings at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon. While the Illini lineup worked eight walks over the contest, the most issued by the UM pitching staff on the season, Illinois broke through for five runs in the top of the eighth to earn the win against the Big Ten-leading Wolverines, who entered the day with a 12-3 conference record. Watch our highlights from the game and read the full recap at FightingIllini.com. INDIANA 1, IOWA 0 – 9 Innings; IOWA 4,

Michigan State's Kirk Cousins

Twitter: Washington, with RG3, drafts Cousins

The fact Kirk Cousins lasted until the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft wasn’t the big surprise Saturday, believe it or not. No, it was the fact Washington, which mortgaged its future to draft Baylor Heisman Trophy QB Robert Griffin III at No. 2, selected Cousins. The selection had “Kirk Cousins” trending worldwide, and rightfully so. See some of the tweets in this post and listen to Cousins’ phone interview during the Michigan State spring game Saturday. Oh, and let’s not forget, congrats go out to Cousins. By taking Kirk Cousins, the Skins have guaranteed a mess of "Heath

Spartans & Badgers Spring Game Preview

The Big Ten wraps up spring drills this Saturday with Michigan State and Wisconsin being the last two schools to finish. And, in some ways, it’s fitting they punctuate spring practices in the Big Ten Conference. The Spartans and Badgers met last season in the inaugural Big Ten title game, with Wisconsin pulling an exhilarating 42-39 victory. Earlier in the season the teams played perhaps the game of the year in the Big Ten, with Michigan State claiming a 37-31 win in East Lansing on a last-second Hail Mary pass from Kirk Cousins to Keith Nichol that forever will be

Dienhart: Q&A with Indiana's Kevin Wilson

No one told Kevin Wilson that the Indiana job was going to be easy. When he arrived from a highly successful stint as offensive coordinator prior to the 2011 season, Wilson found a Hoosier program that had been to one bowl (2007) since 1993. In that time, Cam Cameron, Gerry DiNardo, Terry Hoeppner and Bill Lynch came and went after Bill Mallory left after the 1996 season. Wilson debuted with a 1-11 mark last season, the lone victory coming over FCS South Carolina State. I caught up with Wilson to get his thoughts on where he thinks the program stands

Draft Predictions: Who May Get Picked?

The NFL draft starts at 8 p.m. ET Thursday with the first round, continues Friday with rounds two and three before finishing Saturday with the final four rounds. For Big Ten players, questions linger. Which one will be the first off the board? Iowa offensive tackle Riley Reiff? Illinois defensive end Whitney Mercilus? Someone else? Earlier I talked to some experts about a few bigger Big Ten names and you can find links to draft histories for all Big Ten teams over here. Following is a look at which Big Ten players may get drafted and where. TOP PROSPECTS BY

Dienhart: NFL Experts on Big Ten Talents

If NFL teams are looking for linemen, they may look to the Big Ten often when the draft kicks off with the first round at 8 p.m. ET Thursday. The Big Ten’s top prospects with the best chance to hear their names called on Thursday are linemen: Iowa offensive tackle Riley Reiff; Wisconsin center Peter Konz; Wisconsin guard Kevin Zeitler; Michigan State defensive tackle Jerel Worthy; Illinois defensive end Whitney Mercilus. “It’s a good collection of players,” said NFL Network analyst Charles Davis. In fact, most analyst feel Reiff—who is coming out early–will be the first Big Ten player pick,

Film Session: Michigan State DC Pat Narduzzi

On Tuesday night’s “Big Ten Football Report,” BTN analyst Howard Griffith visited East Lansing to watch some film with Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi. A season ago, Narduzzi’s talented and intimidating unit led the Big Ten in rushing defense (100.5 yards per game), total defense (277.4 ypg.), interceptions (18) and third-down defense (.337). And guess what? The unit returns seven starters and could be even scarier. Watch Griffith’s sit-down with Narduzzi right now and see our previous Film Session features in this post.
