Big Ten coaches 'excited' for 2012? Better believe it

Isn’t late July great? Football is in the air, with kickoff a little more than a month away, and all the teams – even the perennial cellar dwellers – are tied for first place. Coincidentally, when coaches descend upon media days, everyone’s very excited. The Big Ten is no exception. According to The Wall Street Journal, Big Ten coaches uttered some form of the word “excited” 43 times during Thursday’s question-and-answer session at Big Ten Media Days. See who used “excited” the most in this post. [WSJ.com: I can’t tell you how excited I am] [BTN.com: Watch all of our

Denard Robinson To Big Ten Crowd: It's About Choices

Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson spoke to Friday’s Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon crowd, and you can watch his speech right here in this post. People attending the luncheon quickly turned to Twitter and applauded Robinson’s performance. Among his popular remarks, Robinson said, “My motto is: It’s my goal to make somebody’s day every day.” Robinson also said, “Trust me, I’m not perfect. Just ask Coach Hoke. I drive you crazy way too often, right Coach?” Robinson also drew applause when he said, “Character is who you are when no one else is watching. It’s easy when you know the camera is

Clothes Call: Big Ten media days edition

Bill O’Brien created quite the stir when he hinted at possible Penn State uniform changes during Thursday’s first session of Big Ten Media Days. With the recent changes going on at Penn State, it seems plausible that the team would entertain such a decision. Earlier this week, I proposed the question in a post. And on Friday, I asked Penn State’s Jordan Hill and John Urschel about the rumor. See their response in this post, plus get a look at all the Big Ten uniform and helmet changes. Urschel’s response to Penn State possibly changing its uniform: “Anything involving the uniforms,

News & Notes: Penn State's Mauti Shows Heart

Michael Mauti looks like he’s ready to hit somebody or something. The Penn State linebacker sports slicked back hair that covers his neck, his suit coat pulled tight across his arms and shoulders as he leans forward answering questions and staring at a water bottle in front of him. They are tough questions about teammates transferring, and Mauti speaks with passion. He speaks from the heart. It’s refreshing. “I have been selling,” Mauti said Friday during the media availability before the Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon in Chicago. “I have talked to most everyone on the team. We want them all

Mascot Mayhem: Characters Prep for BTN 10K

The Big Ten mascots always seem to have the best time when they come to Chicago for the Big Ten Football Media Day and Kickoff Luncheon, and this year was no exception. Bucky, Brutus, Herky, Sparty, Herbie, and Purdue Pete stopped by “Good Day Chicago” and took over the local Fox affiliate’s TV newsroom during BTN’s appearance to promote Saturday’s BTN Big10K race downtown. This comes on the heels of a recent music video back-and-forth over the summer. Read all of the details over here. Also, way back in 2009, a few mascots mingled at the reception as only they

Dienhart: More Big Ten News, Notes & Tweets

I spent most of Thursday listening to Big Ten coaches and officials address the upcoming season among other topics, then I filed these reports throughout the day. Here are a few extra notes from my notebook of Thursday’s Big Ten Media Day. Also, I posted Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany’s Q&A above. Here’s his opening statement, as well: Depends on the view: Last year, Michigan State won the Legends Division and then lost the Big Ten title game to Wisconsin. That led the Spartans to land an Outback Bowl bid while the Badgers headed to the Rose Bowl. But Michigan
