Did You See This? Devin Smith's one-handed TD grab

Pardon the hyperbole, but there may not be a better catch all season long than the one Ohio State’s Devin Smith made in Saturday’s season opener against Miami (OH) at Ohio Stadium. Early in the second quarter, with Ohio State trailing Miami (OH), Smith gave the Buckeyes the lead with an incredible one-handed touchdown grab. Watch Smith use nothing but his right hand to bring down Braxton Miller’s 23-yard touchdown pass right now.

1st Quarter Recap: Miami (OH) 3, Ohio State 0

The two teams combined for more punts than points in a slow first quarter and Miami (OH) leads 3-0 at the end of the first quarter. There were six punts in the quarter as neither team could find a way to move the ball. The RedHawks held No. 18 Ohio State to just five yards passing during the quarter. Miami (OH) took the game’s first lead after Kaleb Patterson kicked a 21-yard field goal on the last play of a six-play, 64-yard drive. The key play on the RedHawks’ drive was Zac Dysert’s 58-yard pass. Miami (OH) didn’t run a single time during that march downfield.

1st Quarter Recap: Illinois 10, W. Michigan 0

Illinois got things going through the air, passing for 80 yards in the quarter, and the Fighting Illini lead 10-0 at the end of the first quarter. Illinois got on the scoreboard first, rattling off a four-play, 75-yard drive that ended in a score when Nathan Scheelhaase found Ryan Lankford open for a 64-yard touchdown pass.

1st Quarter Recap: Penn State 7, Ohio 0

Penn State sniffed out Ohio’s rushing attack in the first quarter, holding the Bobcats to 16 rush yards and the Nittany Lions lead 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. Penn State’s passing attack looked sharp, as the Nittany Lions threw for 130 yards in the quarter.

New tradition: 1st quick cals at Ohio State

As promised, Ohio State rolled out a new tradition called “Quick Cals.” What are those? At  works: 23 minutes before every home kickoff, in the south end zone, the Buckeye players will do fast, upbeat pregame exercises while facing the students. And the students can participate. Watch the video to see their first one this Saturday morning.

A closer look: Le'Veon Bell's career night

In case you missed it Friday night, Michigan State running back Le’Veon Bell put on quite the performance against Boise State. The junior star had his “Heisman Moment,” one could argue, touching the ball 50 times and totaling 265 yards and two touchdowns in the Spartans’ 17-13 comeback win at Spartan Stadium. Bell on his big night: “I had no idea how many carries or yards I had. It was the most I’ve had in my collegiate career,” he told The AP. “But I’ve still got a lot of things to work on to get better.” That’s a scary thought for Big Ten defenses.
