It was a busy day in Big Ten men’s basketball, as seven teams were in action. No. 8 Michigan was upset at Iowa State, while No. 23 Indiana had no trouble with Stony Brook. Get all the scores, stats and video highlights from Sunday’s action in this post.
It was a Saturday filled with blowouts. Still, there was a lot to learn, beginning with the continued domination of Ohio State and Michigan State. Oh, and Wisconsin is pretty good, too. Everyone else? See what I learned in Week 12 in this post.
Purdue’s Basil Smotherman threw down the kind of dunk that drops jaws in the second half of Sunday’s win over Rider. The freshman drove and exploded for a left-handed posterizing dunk that delighted the Mackey Arena faithful. Former Flyin’ Illini star Stephen Bardo, the color commentator for the game, liked what he saw, too, saying: “Putting Rider on a poster. They’re for the sale in the lobby coming up.”
Ohio State remains on top with another impressive victory, but I finally am moving Michigan State past Wisconsin and into the No. 2 spot in my power rankings. Yes, that win at Nebraska was that vital. Sorry, Wisconsin. Without a doubt, there seems to be a big drop between the top three teams and everyone else.
Perfect Ohio State remained No. 3 in the latest BCS Standings, released Sunday night. The Buckeyes (.8869) still trail No. 1 Alabama (.9981) and No. 2 Florida State (.9661). Meanwhile, Michigan State and Wisconsin both moved up, to No. 13 and No. 19, respectively, and Minnesota debuted at No. 25. See the full poll in this post, plus the Coaches and AP polls.
