Big Ten suspends Charles, Smith for tourney scuffle

On Tuesday, the Big Ten Conference office announced it has suspended Purdue’s Eric Charles and Indiana’s Casey Smith for one game apiece for their roles in the bench-clearing brawl during Saturday night’s 2012 Big Ten Baseball Tournament championship game. Charles will serve his suspension during Purdue’s opening NCAA Championship game Friday, while Smith will be suspended for Indiana’s 2013 season opener. Dienhart: Big Ten Assistants Primed To Move Up

In recent years, several assistants have gone directly from Big Ten schools to launch head coaching careers. Wisconsin and Michigan State have been the most fertile proving grounds of late as Pitt’s Paul Chryst (Wisconsin offensive coordinator) and Northern Illinois’ Dave Doeren (Wisconsin defensive coordinator) came directly from Bret Bielema’s Badger staff the last two seasons.

B1G champ Purdue picked to host NCAA Regional

One day after winning the school’s first Big Ten tournament title and, in the process, earning the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, Purdue was selected as one of 16 NCAA Regional hosts, it was announced Sunday. The Boilermakers (44-12), who also won the Big Ten regular-season crown, will host the four-team regional Friday-Sunday at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Ind. Lambert Field, Purdue’s home, and Loeb Stadium in Lafayette, Ind., did not meet NCAA requirements, so the regional moves to Gary.
