Michigan State baseball defeated Iowa on Mother’s Day at Duane Banks Field, 4-2. The Spartans (29-16, 10-8 Big Ten) got an outstanding performance out of sophomore Mick VanVossen on the mound. He allowed just two runs, one earned in the win. Blaise Slater and Justin Hovis both notched RBIs for the Spartans. After a 6-0 loss to Nebraska on Friday, Minnesota tied up the series with a 4-3 victory Saturday at Siebert Field. With the win, the Gophers (29-17, 12-5) return to the top of the Big Ten standings after Indiana lost, 12-1, to Northwestern. Nebraska falls to 22-26 in the season and 13-7 in the conference. Saturday’s Big Ten softball tournament semifinals featured a pair of highlight catches. The first one came in the first game, when Wisconsin third baseman Michelle Mueller battled the sun, wind and fence down the left-field line to make the grab; the second one happened in the second game, when Nebraska catcher Taylor Edwards went to her knees to record the out near the backstop. It’s always a good thing when a pitcher and catcher are on the same page. Nebraska’s main battery, it seems, was born to think along the same wavelength.
