2nd quarter recap: Northwestern 6, Michigan State 5

Keith Mumphery led Michigan State in the quarter, hauling in two passes for 33 yards, but the Spartans trail 6-5. Dan Conroy’s 35-yard field goal put Michigan State on top 5-3, the finishing touch on a 12-play, 37-yard drive. Jeff Budzien’s 43-yard field goal gave Northwestern the lead 6-5 after a six-play, 16-yard drive. Tony Jones’ punt return put the Wildcats at the Spartans’ 42-yard line to open the drive. 2nd quarter recap: Michigan 28, Iowa 10

Michigan got things going through the air, passing for 183 yards in the quarter, and the Wolverines now lead 28-10. Michigan has erupted for 14 straight points. The Wolverines broke the 7-7 deadlock when Devin Gardner found Roy Roundtree open for a 37-yard touchdown pass to finish off a six-play, 79-yard scoring drive. Denard Robinson’s 40-yard run from the 30-yard line pushed Michigan into enemy territory. Iowa made the score 14-10 after Mike Meyer drilled a 26-yard field goal to finish off a 55-yard drive. Did You See This? Penn State fans cheer Mauti

This is not the way Penn State’s Michael Mauti wanted to leave Beaver Stadium, perhaps, for the final time in his career. Already having suffered a pair of knee surgeries, Mauti left Saturday’s game on a cart after injuring his left knee. Mauti is a fan favorite, both for his incredible play and leadership, so it’s no surprise the Penn State faithful gave him a standing ovation and chanted his name as he left the field. Penn State’s Allen Robinson led the offense in the first quarter. He caught three passes for 32 yards and one touchdown, and the Nittany Lions lead 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. Penn State took the game’s first lead after Matt McGloin and Robinson combined for a 26-yard touchdown on the last play of a seven-play, 91-yard drive. Michigan State made the score 3-0 when Northwestern failed to convert on fourth-and-5. The Spartans added two points on a safety when Kain Colter was corralled in the endzone, making the score 3-2. Iowa’s Henry Krieger-Coble caught two passes for 20 yards and one touchdown in the quarter, and the two teams are tied 7-7 at the end of the first. No. 24 Michigan struck first when Devin Gardner turned a quarterback sneak into a one-yard touchdown run, the final play of a 12-play, 70-yard drive. The Hawkeyes got even after James Vandenberg threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Krieger-Coble to end a 13-play, 75-yard drive that tied the score at seven. In volleyball action on Friday night, Minnesota beat Nebraska in five sets (12-25, 25-15, 25-22, 19-25, 19-21). The Gophers win puts them in a tie with Nebraska for second place in the Big Ten.
