Big Ten Geeks: Four weeks in & what do we know?

With the volume of competitive games slowing considerably this week, it seems like a good time to reflect on what we’ve seen in the first four weeks of the 2012-13 basketball season. In bullet point format, here’s what I’ve found interesting so far: Jared Berggren is an NBA player. This statement could prove a bit premature, as Berggren has struggled with conference play in his career, but Wisconsin’s senior center has been off the charts. Berggren is shooting 65 percent on twos, 41 percent on threes, and 84 percent on free throws, all while dominating the offensive glass and rarely

Big Ten Links: Well, that was an interesting week

What a week in the Big Ten! Purdue hires a coach. Wisconsin sees a coach bolt. The Silver Football is handed out. At least the Big Ten didn’t expand this week. But that didn’t stop the discussion about future growth. What league will make the next move? Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany says the Big Ten is “inactive but alert” on expansion. Read about that and other Big Ten grid news in my daily links. “Monitoring the landscape is overused so we’re trying to figure out what’s the most apt way to describe where we are,” Delany told the Associated

Barry Alvarez

Dienhart: It's Alvarez for now, but who's next?

A third consecutive trip to the Rose Bowl is something to celebrate for Wisconsin. But the euphoria is muted a bit by the unknown of who will be the next Badger head coach with Bret Bielema off to coach Arkansas after seven seasons and a 68-24 record. Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez addressed the media today, commenting on a variety of subjects. First and foremost: Alvarez will coach the Badgers in the Rose Bowl after being asked to do so by the players. He will oversee things, letting the coaches assemble the game plan. Alvarez went 118-73-4 from 1990-2005 as

Alvarez to coach Badgers in Rose Bowl

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez announced Thursday morning that he will coach the Wisconsin Badgers in the Rose Bowl after the Badgers players asked him to lead them in Pasadena. “My first concern is about the players,” Alvarez said as he explained the decision. After Bret Bielema accepted the job as football coach at Arkansas, Alvarez said he was contacted by Wisconsin co-captain Mike Taylor and said the players told him they would like Alvarez to coach them in the Rose Bowl. “I told him I would be honored to coach them,” Alvarez said. “I wanted them (the players) to
