No. 3 Minnesota rallies past No. 15 Oregon State

The third-ranked Minnesota wrestling team rallied past No. 15 Oregon State, 21-18, Saturday night at the Sports Pavilion. The match came down to the heavyweight battle, and it was Minnesota’s Tony Nelson notching a double-overtime victory over Oregon State’s Chad Hanke. Watch our interview with Nelson now. No. 9 Nebraska takes down Arizona State, 18-12

In a back and forth battle, the No. 9 Nebraska wrestling team took down Arizona State, 18-12, on Saturday night at the NU Coliseum. Wrestling in front of 778 fans, the Huskers improved to 5-1, while the Sun Devils fell to 5-2. No. 6 Josh Ihnen started the match with a 6-2 decision over No. 20 Kevin Radford of Arizona State at 184 pounds. Ihnen, a senior, improves to 13-1 on the season with the victory, including a 5-1 mark in duals. The Sun Devils responded with three consecutive victories at 197, Heavyweight and 125 to take a 9-3 lead.

Penn State takes down Army, 78-70

D.J. Newbill scored 19 points and Jermaine Marshall added 16 as Penn State survived a second-half surge by Army in a 78-70 win on Saturday. Penn State (5-4) led by as much as 15 in the first half and carried a 12-point lead into the break, only to see its lead cut to two with 12 minutes remaining in the game. Army went cold from there, however, going more than seven minutes without a basket. Only a sophomore, Sam Thompson has plenty of individual highlights ahead of him. Thing is, the high-flying Buckeye may have a difficult time topping the highlight reel he directed in Saturday’s rout of Long Beach State. Thompson made a living high above the rim, throwing down a pair of impressive alley-oops and slamming home an inbound pass. No. 17 Michigan State puts away feisty Loyola

Gary Harris scored 20 points and No. 19 Michigan State broke away in the second half to beat Loyola of Chicago 73-61 Saturday. Adreian Payne added 14 points and 10 rebounds for Michigan State (8-2). Down 32-30 at the break, the Spartans went on a 22-9 run to take control. Harris hit three 3-pointers during the burst. No. 7 Ohio State pummels Long Beach State

Deshaun Thomas had 18 points to lead No. 7 Ohio State past tired Long Beach State 89-55 on Saturday. LaQuinton Ross had 16 points in a reserve role, Lenzelle Smith Jr. added 14, and Sam Thompson had 13 for the Buckeyes (6-1), who built a 42-point lead before experimenting with different lineup combinations. No. 3 Michigan holds off Arkansas, 80-67

Jordan Morgan scored a season-high 12 points and matched a season high with 10 rebounds to help No. 3 Michigan beat Arkansas 80-67 Saturday. The Wolverines (9-0) are off to their best start since they won the first 11 games of the 1988-89 season, when they went on to win the program’s only national title. White scores 18 as Iowa downs Iowa State
