Season in review: Ohio State football

I’m rolling out some quick football season reviews during the lull between the end of football’s regular season and the bowl games, and I’m starting with Ohio State. In Urban Meyer’s much-anticipated debut, Ohio State went 12-0 and ranked No. 3 in the AP poll as one of just two FBS unbeatens. It was the sixth unbeaten and untied season in school annals. But, because of NCAA probation, the Buckeyes weren’t eligible to play in the Big Ten title game or a bowl. Still, it doesn’t diminish what Ohio State did in notching a perfect mark behind an offense with

Sam Thompson

Did You See This? Thompson dunks inbound pass

OK, the time has come for teams to account for Sam Thompson on each and every inbound pass under Ohio State’s basket. There’s no excuse – not after the athletic sophomore threw down an inbound alley-oop for at least the fourth time in his year-plus in Columbus. Heck, he just did it Saturday, in addition to twice last year (here & here). Watch Thompson’s latest inbound alley-oop now and watch his other dunk from Wednesday night. Wisconsin starts slow, knocks off Green Bay

Ryan Evans scored 13 points to lead Wisconsin to a 65-54 win over Wisconsin-Green Bay on Wednesday night. Sam Dekker and Jared Berggren each added 10 points for the Badgers (7-4). Keifer Sykes scored 14 points to lead the Phoenix (3-6), while Brennan Cougill added 12. Coming off a deflating loss to in-state rival Marquette on Saturday, the Badgers started the game in a funk. They hit just four of their first 14 shots, and Green Bay led 19-12 a little more than midway through the first half. But the Badgers went on a 15-4 run to close the half

No. 7 Ohio State dismantles Savannah State

Deshaun Thomas scored all but one of his 22 points in the first half and No. 7 Ohio State showed its firepower inside and out in beating Savannah State 85-45 on Wednesday night. LaQuinton Ross added 13 points, Shannon Scott had 12 and Evan Ravenel 11 for the Buckeyes (7-1), who are three games into an eight-game homestand that will carry them all the way through the Big Ten opener against Nebraska on Jan. 2. Arnold Louis led Savannah State (5-5) with 14 points. The Tigers came in relying on their stingy defense. They were allowing only 53.0 points a

MarQueis Gray

Did You See This? MarQueis Gray gets married

Minnesota senior MarQueis Gray will have no trouble remembering what he did on 12/12/12. The quarterback-turned-receiver-turned-quarterback-turned-receiver got married Wednesday. Gray tweeted a picture of the happy couple, with the message: “Thanks everyone for the best wishes!! From the newlywed couple @MissAlleyBehr and myself!!” See the picture in this post. Here are the newlyweds: Thanks everyone for the best wishes!! From the newlywed couple @MIssAlleyBehr and myself!! — MarQueis Gray (@MarQueisG) December 13, 2012 The wedding date of 12/12/12 makes a lot of sense, considering Gray and his wife, Alley Behr, had twin boys on 11/11/11. Nebraska vs Wisconsin

Mailbag: What about Gruden at Wisconsin?

You have questions, and I have answers in this week’s mailbag. Many of you remain focused on football—and coaching news—even though hoop season is starting to hit full-stride. Bottom line: There’s a lot going on in the Big Ten with the holidays fast approaching. Who do you think Barry Alvarez will pick for the Badgers head coaching position? – Jeff Linderman Good question. Alvarez is well-connected and figures to make a good hire. Some have told me they think he will want to hire a person with head coaching experience, as he may not have the time, energy or inclination

Capital One Bowl

Dienhart: Best of the Big Ten Bowls

There are seven Big Ten teams in bowl games. And there would be two more, if not for Ohio State and Penn State being on probation. What’s the best quarterback duel? Wheres’ the best chance for an upset? Which game is the best candidate for a good, old shootout? Here’s a look at the best of the best involving the Big Ten and bowls games. Best game: The Rose Bowl clash between Stanford and Wisconsin will be like looking in the mirror. Each school has a tough, physical, punch-you-in-the-nose offense along with an underrated defense. Did You See This? Rodney Williams 360 slam

He did it again. High-flying Rodney Williams delighted the Williams Arena crowd Tuesday night, this time with another highlight-reel 360 slam. Remember this 360 from last season? Well, this full revolution was just as sweet – yes, even if Williams didn’t stick the landing. Watch Williams’ latest jaw-dropping poke here and check out a couple Trevor Mbawke putbacks in this post.
