No. 7 Ohio State blasts UNC Asheville, 90-72

Sam Thompson scored a career-high 18 points and No. 7 Ohio State made the most of an opportunity to get out and run, beating UNC Asheville 90-72 on Saturday. Deshaun Thomas had 17 points, Lenzelle Smith Jr. 16 and Evan Ravenel tied a career best with 12 points in the first half for the Buckeyes (8-1), who tuned up for a big showdown next Saturday against No. 9 Kansas with the fourth game in an eight-game homestand. Buckeyes lose to Miami (OH), 2-1

Devon Krogh scored Ohio State’s lone goal in a 2-1 shootout loss to Miami (OH) on Friday night at Value City Arena. Watch the recap now and jump inside for an interview with NHL player and former Buckeye R.J. Umberger. R.J. Umberger interview:

Drew Crawford

Wildcats F Drew Crawford out for season

Bad news from Northwestern, as the school announced that senior forward  Drew Crawford will undergo surgery on his right shoulder and will miss the remainder of the 2012-13 season. Crawford has been diagnosed with having a torn labrum and is eligible to seek a medical hardship waiver. Crawford is one of the Big Ten’s top scorers, so losing him hampers a program that looked primed to make its first trip to the NCAA tourney. Players like Reggie Hearn, Jared Swopshire and Dave Sobolewski need to step up. Crawford has started all 10 games for the 7-3 Wildcats and ranks second in

Season in review: Iowa football

This is a young Iowa team, so few expected a legit contender. But no one envisioned the Hawkeyes floundering. The offense was the root cause, ranking No. 11 in the Big Ten overall (310.4 ypg) and 11th in scoring (19.3 ppg). QB James Vandenberg took a big step back from a productive junior season, dropping from 25 touchdown passes to seven. [RELATED: Read Tom Dienhart’s ongoing series of 2012 football season reviews. ] The Hawkeyes ended the season on a six-game losing skein, missing a bowl for the first time since 2007, notching their first losing mark since a 6-7 record

Ohio State Buckeyes forward Deshaun Thomas

Q&A: Ohio State's Deshaun Thomas

If Ohio State is going to return to the Final Four, Deshaun Thomas knows he must carry a big load. And he embraces that responsibility playing in a loaded Big Ten that most feel is the best conference in America. So far, so good this season. The No. 7 Buckeyes are off to a 7-1 start, with the lone loss coming at Duke, which is No. 2 in the nation. And Thomas is leading the way with a Big Ten-best 20.8-point average, following a 31-8 mark and regular-season crown in 2011-12 under Thad Matta. I caught up with Thomas as Ohio

Holiday hoops: What lies ahead for hoops teams?

With less than two weeks of holiday shopping left before Christmas,’s Big Ten Geeks Josh Reed and Mike Portscheller rolled out their Christmas wish list for each of the 12 men’s basketball teams. After looking at the numbers so far this season, our men’s basketball bloggers have some interesting requests. Michigan, Penn State fall at NCAA tourney

Michigan fell to No. 3 seed Texas, 3-2, in the first semifinal of the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament tonight, then top-seeded Penn State was upset by Oregon, 3-1, in the second semifinal. Texas and Oregon advance to Saturday’s championship. Kara Lentz and Michelle McMahon wrap-up the action for BTN with more video coverage inside this post. Penn State Nittany Lions linebacker Gerald Hodges

Season in review: Penn State football

The challenges were many for a program rocked by scandal and probation that saw some top players transfer before the season began. But Bill O’Brien and the Nittany Lions never flinched—not even after an 0-2 with losses to Ohio and at Virginia. Penn State went 8-2 in its last 10 games, with the losses coming to the Big Ten’s two best teams in Nebraska and Ohio State. Michigan State's Magic Johnson

What's your top March Madness moment?

The NCAA is celebrating 75 years of March Madness by naming the top 75 all-time March Madness players, 25 all-time March Madness teams and 35 all-time Madness Moments. The Big Ten is well-represented. And yes, there is a fan vote component coming soon. Players like Ohio State’s Jerry Lucas and Indiana’s Scott May, among others, are honored. The 1959-60 Ohio State, 1975-76 Indiana, 1978-79 Michigan State teams also are honored. That Spartans team was coached by the legendary Jud Heathcote (see the video in this post). Also, the Hoosiers’ unbeaten run in 1975-76 and the Bird-Magic battle in 1978-79 are

Dienhart: Will they stay or will they go?

We already have seen Ohio State defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins turn pro. Some other Big Ten players likely are wrestling with the decision. Here is a look at ten Big Ten underclassmen who appear to be the most coveted and could opt to turn pro. The deadline to declare is Jan. 15.
