Entering the final day of the 2014 Big Ten Wrestling Championships, only 11 wrestlers had won four Big Ten championships in the event’s first 99 years. Add two more to the list. Penn State seniors David Taylor (165-pound) and Ed Ruth (184-pound) joined the rare group with impressive title victories Sunday in Madison, Wis. Ohio State honored a pair of special seniors prior to Sunday night’s win over No. 22 Michigan State in the season finale at Value City Arena. Those seniors, of course, would be guards Aaron Craft and Lenzelle Smith, who have, at worst, led the Buckeyes to the Sweet 16 every year in Columbus. Minnesota honored its senior players prior to Sunday night’s game vs. Penn State. The Williams Arena faithful showered Maverick Ahanmisi, Austin Hollins, Oto Osenieks and Malik Smith with plenty of love. Ahanmisi and Hollins were the lone four-year players, while Osenieks played three years and recently decided to call it a career and Smith was a one-year reserve. Following Sunday’s season-finale loss to Northwestern, Purdue honored its four senior players, including Terone Johnson, at Mackey Arena. Johnson and Travis Carroll helped Purdue make the NCAA tournament in each of their first two seasons, in 2011 and 2012, the Boilermakers’ last NCAA appearances. It’s safe to say Jon Ekey won’t hit a bigger shot in his Illinois career. The Illini senior, who played three seasons at Illinois State, drained a memorable last-second 3-pointer to lift Illinois to a 66-63 season-ending road win Saturday night at No. 24 Iowa. With the dramatic victory, the Illini enters next week’s Big Ten tourney having won four of their last five games. Watch Ekey’s game-winning shot in this post.
