Purdue held Iowa to 19 yards on the ground during the first quarter and the Boilermakers lead 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. Purdue scored when Akeem Shavers pounded in a three-yard touchdown run to cap a nine-play, 68-yard drive, giving the Boilermakers the game’s first lead. Robert Marve’s 23-yard pass to Shavers took Purdue from the 42 and across midfield to ignite the drive.
