We are in the second week of January, which means that the college basketball season is officially at the midway point. Through two months, Wisconsin is the only Big Ten team without a loss this season, sitting at a perfect 16-0. The Badgers are joined by Michigan State and Michigan as the only three teams without a conference loss.
Sam Dekker is one of the Big Ten’s top players. Did you know he also really likes to rap? On Sunday night’s premiere of “The Journey: Big Ten Basketball 2014,” Nigel Hayes told us this about his star teammate: “I really believe he’d rather be Eminem than LeBron James, if he could pick.” Watch one of our show’s segments on Dekker in this post.
Let’s just say Fran McCaffery was really excited about Sunday’s upset at No. 3 Ohio State. And who can blame him? This was McCaffery’s first game back from the one-game suspension he received for his actions in last week’s loss at Wisconsin. It also marked Iowa’s first win over a top 5 team since 2001. So, how excited was he? Well, the Iowa coach had chest-bumps for his players after the final buzzer. Watch it in this post.
Another Ohio State game, another opportunity for Aaron Craft to amaze fans with his all-out hustle. While the latest example came in Sunday’s home loss vs. No. 20 Iowa, Craft’s effort to save a ball under his own basket can’t be ignored. Not only did he save the ball, he went airborne – as he often does – and took out a cheerleader who was seated right under the basket. Watch the hustle play in this post.
Sunday featured a trio of Big Ten men’s basketball games. There were two huge upsets as No. 20 Iowa got the best of No. 3 Ohio State in Columbus, while Northwestern upset No. 23 Illinois in Evanston. Purdue held off Nebraska for its first Big Ten win in the other game.
It was a busy day on the Big Ten women’s hardwood, as 10 of the conference’s 12 teams are in action. The highlight of the day? That would be No. 21 Purdue going on the road and upsetting No. 14 Penn State, 84-74. Catch up on all the scores, stats and recaps in this post.
